New Jersey teacher, youth coach charged with assault of juvenile
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY – On Thursday, Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll announced the arrest of Joseph Derose Jr., 27, for an assault and related charges. Derose Jr. is a substitute teacher at Catherine A. Dwyer Elementary School in Rockaway Township. Derose Jr. faces charges on two separate complaints from Rockaway Township and Rockaway Borough, including second-degree non-consensual assault, third-degree endangering child welfare, and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. He allegedly had an intimate relationship with a 16-year-old victim from May 2021 through January 2022 while serving as the victim’s baseball coach. Newark Police seeking to identify shooting suspects
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY – Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé is seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects connected to an incident of criminal mischief that occurred on last month. Today, police released a photo of the suspects. Police were called to the 100 block of Brunswick Street after reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found multiple spent shell casings, but no injuries have been reported. National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning for Sunday, March 19
SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The National Weather Service (NOAA) has issued a Red Flag warning for Northeast New Jersey. The warning becomes effective at 10:00 am, Sunday morning and lasts until 8:00 pm Sunday evening. In addition to Essex and Union Counties, the alert includes Bergen, Hudson, Passaic Counties. The warning covers the time period from 10:00am until 8:00pm. NOAA lists the following reasons for issuing the alert: WINDS will be Wet at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30mph. RELATIVE HUMIDITY is expected to be as low as 25 percent. TEMPERATURE will range from the Mid 30s to the LOW 40s. The IMPACT is Critical fire weather conditions, which could cause rapid wildfire growth and spread should ignition occur. This warning is to alert all to be cautious when outside and should anything that resembles the chance of a fire having been ignited, notify call 911 and report it.

Summit Police Seek Public's Assistance in Identifying Vehicle Involved in Early-Morning Hit-and-Run
SUMMIT, NJ - The City of Summit Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a vehicle involved an early-morning hit-and-run incident which occurred today (March 18) at the intersection of Morris and Mountain Avenues. Today's incident marks the fourth time in just over six weeks that a Summit pedestrian has been struck by a motor vehicle. Three of the victims were confirmed to be in a crosswalk when struck. In the latest incident, a 28-year-old male pedestrian was struck in a crosswalk at the afore-mentioned intersection today at 5:32 a.m. He was transported to Overlook Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of an older model possibly 2005 to 2010 white Dodge Durango fled the scene heading west on Mountain Avenue toward New Providence. Mountain Avenue residents with video or doorbell cameras are asked to look for footage of the vehicle between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m. this morning. American Red Cross Sets Up Shelter at Hanover Community Center after Hotel Fire
HANOVER, TOWNSHIP - A fire at the Red-Carpet Inn in Whippany on Friday, March 17 was the cause of a mass evacuation of guests at the property. It is reported that no one was injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Hanover Township Police Department, and Hanover Township Fire District #3. In response to the displacement of the guests, the American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at the Hanover Township Community Center where those affected by the fire are receiving attention. As a result, all activities at the Township's Community Center are canceled through Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
Repeat Offender Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for Manslaughter
UNION COUNTY, NEW JERSEY – Union County Superior Court Judge Candido Rodriguez, Jr. has sentenced Laquan McCall, 31, to an extended term of 16 years in State Prison for second-degree manslaughter. McCall’s prior criminal history led to his classification as a persistent offender, resulting in a lengthier sentence than the typical 5 to 10 years for second-degree crimes. Judge Rodriguez also ordered that McCall must serve at least 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. Christopher Elliott, an accomplice who pled guilty to third-degree aggravated assault, was sentenced to 3 years in State Prison. A 43-year-old man died after an assault in Newark, authorities said. Officers responding to reports of an assault found Amin Abdul-Aziz on the 100 block of North Munn Avenue, around 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
