Golden Eagles run to regional championship repeat
Surry Central’s boys cross country team captured both the team and individual titles at the 3A West regional championship. The Golden Eagles repeated as regional champions after winning the 2025 title and going on to finish as 3A state runner-up. Surry Central’s top five finishers at Tryon International added up to 42 points, beating runner-up Pine Lake Prep by 17. Teams were scored based on the finishing positions of their top five runners. Schools without at least five finishers did not receive points. The Golden Eagles were led by juniors Eduardo Ramirez Romero and Jack Hardy, who finished first and second, respectively. Ramirez Romero won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:06.40, and Hardy followed at 17:08.90. East Rutherford’s Colt Wilson was the only other runner to finish within nine seconds of Ramirez Romero, placing third at 17:09.40. Of the 82 runners in the boys’ race, only 14 finished in less than 18 minutes. Surry Central had four runners with sub-18 times, while no other school had more than two. Gib Martin, a junior, placed 12th at 17:49.40. Fellow Golden Eagle Franco Zapata, a senior, was less than a second behind at 17:50.30. Freshman Leonel Garcia Santiago rounded out

He surpassed Wyatt Wall’s record of 388 tackles against Forbush earlier this season. Wall, a 2025 graduate who played two seasons with Whitley, was present to see his former teammate break the record in East Bend. “I’ve been lucky enough to be his coach all four years,” said Surry Central defensive coordinator Stephen Priddy, who coached both Wall and Whitley. “It was great to see it firsthand and be a part of it. “He’s withstood a lot of trials and tribulations in our seasons, but to still have the work ethic, dedication and loyalty that he does speaks to what kind of person he is.” Whitley was a four-year varsity player for the Golden Eagles. He averaged nearly nine tackles per game as a freshman and worked his way up to nearly 14 per game as a senior. As a sophomore, Whitley and Wall combined for 247 total tackles and 36 tackles for loss. Whitley took on a much
