Lansing authorities remember fallen firefighter
LANSING, N.Y. (WHCU) — The Lansing Fire Department is mourning the loss of a member. James Jackson passed away peacefully earlier this month. He answered EMS and fire calls. A memorial service will be held on April 15 at 1 PM at Lansing United Methodist Church. Jackson was 81.
Homeless housing plan gains traction in Tompkins County
ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A homeless action plan is gaining support in Tompkins County. The project Home, Together: Tompkins aims to expand emergency shelter, and build 100 units of housing. The Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency endorsed the plan last week. Ithaca’s Common Council will also consider supporting it.
Chemung County Senior Games

The 2023 Chemung County Senior Games are scheduled for May 23rd through June 16th. They will include softball, pickleball, golf, shuffleboard, bocce, bowling, corn hole (bean bag toss), and many more events for participants aged 50 and over at sites throughout the county. There is a nominal $10 fee necessary to participate, and the first 500 athletes will receive a Senior Game T-Shirt. Last year nearly 400 athletes came from as far away as Tully and from throughout New York State as well as Pennsylvania to participate in our Senior Games.

Multiple Fire Departments Respond to Timber Fire on Sunday Afternoon
Around 5pm on Sunday, March 26th, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Fire Departments from Dryden, Freeville and McLean responded to a large downed timber fire. As firefighters responded to the area, the actual fire was a considerable distance from the road. Responding departments used off-road UTV’s to haul water, personnel, and equipment to the area of the fire.

Barton approves lower speed limit

Dryden Police Investigating Shots Fired; Weapon Missing
Around 11pm on Saturday, March 25th, the Dryden Police Department responded to an undisclosed location within the Village of Dryden for a reported shots fired. Through an investigation conducted by Dryden Police, officers were able to determine that a shooting incident did occur in the area of the original call. DPD say the suspect responsible for the incident was taken into custody, their name has not been revealed by officers.
Tompkins County composts more than 1 million pounds of food scraps in 2022
ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Tompkins County’s composting program eliminated more than 1 million pounds of food garbage last year. organics program’s seventeen food scraps recycling drop spots 82,000 times and generated more than 534 tons of material in 2022. The food scraps are processed at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center’s food scraps transfer station and then delivered to Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg.
Outdoor gear retailer REI plans to set up camp in Ithaca
ITHACA, N.Y.—For a city of gorges, it would seem fitting that a high-profile outdoor and camping gear retailer would set its sights on some local digs. REI, the retail name for Recreational Equipment Inc., is a retail and outdoor recreation services co-operative based in the Seattle suburbs. Specializing in camping goods, fitness equipment, and travel apparel, the firm operates 165 stores in 39 states, with the only Upstate New York location operating in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta. But now, REI has decided they could use a second Upstate location, right in the city of Ithaca.
