200 years ago today, a village vote formed Ithaca’s first volunteer fire company
The earliest precursor of the Ithaca Fire Department can be traced to June 6th, 1823, when leaders in the Village of Ithaca “voted to purchase a hand pumper, twenty-seven feet of leather hose, a nozzle, and rope to pull it all by hand,” according to IFD public information officer Assistant Chief James Wheal.
Meet Shur-Save's New Owner
As of Thursday, April 20, Shur-Save, the only grocery store in the Village of Trumansburg, is under new management. Shur-Save was first founded in 1981 by Jim and Sandy Seafuse. In the fall of 2021, Ravi Meel, owner ofClark's Food Mart in Dryden and a 7-11 in Ithaca's Collegetown,decided to purchase the Shur-Save, seeking more opportunities and to expand his business portfolio. The owner at the time, the Seafuses' son Bret Seafuse, wanted to retire after 40 years of working at the store.

Tompkins County cancels foreclosed property auction after ruling says they can’t keep the profits
Tompkins County had planned a real property tax foreclosure auction for Monday evening, but has “indefinitely postponed” it in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision late last month that ruled municipalities auctioning off private property to recover unpaid taxes can’t keep the profits from such sales.
Finger Lakes Land Trust adds land, expands Parsons Biodiversity Preserve
DANBY, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) has added acreage to its massive Lindsay Parsons Biodiversity Preserve. The organization announced the expansion with a recent purchase in West Danby that will add 8.5 acres to the northeastern corner of the 537-acre Parsons Preserve. It’s the fourteenth addition to the conservation area, which was established in 1995 with just 36 acres.
Air Quality Alert issued locally until Tuesday due to wildfires in Canada
ITHACA, N.Y.—An Air Quality Alert has been issued by the National Weather Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for a large swath of upstate New York that includes Tompkins County. The alert, which focuses on fine particulate matter in the air, is set to expire Tuesday (either at midnight or 10:15 a.m., depending on the agency), according to NWS.
Downtown Ithaca Alliance announces new CEO
ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) has its new leader. The organization has chosen Nan Rohrer to be the new chief executive officer after a nationwide search. The Yale educated Rohrer has more than 20 years of experience in planning, downtown revitalization, and economic development in Baltimore.

Ithaca Police expanded their search for a missing man to include part of Newfield on Friday. Police say Thomas Rath went missing on May 19 under suspicious circumstances. Rath was first reported missing from the encampment known as “The Jungle” along Ithaca’s inlet. He is 6 feet tall and weighs about 145 lbs. He has several tattoos. One is a black and pink heart on his neck. Police would like anyone with information about Rath to contact them.

Cortland Police Investigating Vandalism at Suggett Park
There has recently been vandalism on the new concrete pad under the pavilion at Suggett Park next to the Burch Building in the City of Cortland. Cortland Police are currently investigating the vandalism. It is believed to have occurred between Friday, June 2nd and Monday, June 5th, by someone using a large rock to smash the concrete pad. The damage done has been considered to be significant.
