Two candidates backed by embattled former Mount Holly Fire Director Jason Carty suffered landslide defeats on Tuesday, as voters overwhelmingly supported incumbent Fire Commissioner Rosemarie Logue and her running mate, J. Gary Brotz, following months of legal battles and controversy surrounding the Burlington County fire district. With 87.5% of districts...
After nearly 60 years, Neshaminy Mall announced it would be closing its doors via Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo and other Bensalem, Pennsylvania, officials on Monday, Sept. 14. The mall notably saw a serious decline during the COVID-19 pandemic closures, along with the major toll the online ordering world has had on many malls across the country.
I have a theory as to why New Jersey has a low divorce rate.
I spent Election Day knocking on doors in my neighborhood. When I read TLS’s “By The Numbers” breakdown the next morning, I had to read one line twice. According to the county’s unofficial returns that TLS reported, Lakewood counted 22,556 ballots out of 66,776 registered voters. That is about 34 percent. Jackson counted 23,413 out of 42,533, which is 55 percent. Jackson cast 857 more ballots than we did, even though it has about 24,000 fewer registered voters.
At 4:30 in the morning, Route 17 is already carrying people somewhere, and Perry’s Bagel Cafe is already feeding them. A few hours later, breakfast crowds will fill the usual places, but these early counters and diners have been busy since the sky was dark. They serve commuters watching...
Ocean County is taking bids to mill and repave 2.27 miles of county roads in Lakewood. Besides the repaving, the contract covers replacing deteriorated drainage pipe, rebuilding ADA curb ramps, changing three existing traffic signals, and new stripes and markings. New Jersey homeowners cannot fertilize lawns from Nov. 15 to March 1. What the blackout allows, what it bans and the year-round limits on nitrogen and phosphorus.
Remember when a road trip meant pulling off the highway for eggs, coffee, and a seat at the counter? New Jersey still has a few places that work exactly that way. Some sit right off the Turnpike, and others hide inside old dining cars that have been serving drivers for generations. Here are five spots where the coffee keeps coming and the 1970s never really left.
Geologists and Pine Barrens explorers have argued over the Blue Hole in New Jersey since the mid-19th century. Surrounded by tea-colored waterways, stained by decaying conifer needles and iron-laden bogs, this pond of clear water stays cool even in the warmest summer months and doesn’t mix with the muddy water of an adjacent river, and […]
Food truck festivals pack New Jersey parks in November, from wing eating competitions in Mullica Hill to taco and empanada celebrations in South Bound Brook. Each event brings live music and crowds looking for something beyond the usual.
Two years after delivering commanding margins for Donald Trump, the Jersey Shore cracked open on Tuesday, as a surging Democratic midterm wave flipped Monmouth County’s government for the first time in nearly two decades and sharply eroded Republican dominance in neighboring Ocean County. In Monmouth County, where Republicans had not lost a countywide contest since 2008, Democrats completed a stunning sweep of two county commissioner seats and the surrogate’s office. At the top of the ticket, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker carried the county with 51.8% of the vote — an 11-point swing from 2024, when Republican Curtis Bashaw carried Monmouth by nearly 10 percentage points over Andy Kim, according to unofficial results from the county clerk’s office. South of the Manasquan River in staunchly conservative Ocean County, the Republican firewall held, but its foundations showed visible wear. While GOP incumbents held their seats down the ballot, margins shrank across every federal and local race, reflecting an electorate energized by national headwinds against the second Trump administration. U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-New Jersey, whose Second Congressional District includes most of southern Ocean County, was defeated Tuesday by Democratic challenger Zack Mullock. A mastodon skeleton, an Egyptian mummy, and a room of glowing minerals share one building, and nobody asks for a ticket. That alone made me look twice. Admission is free, with donations welcomed. The building dates to 1872, so the setting feels as old-school as the specimens inside. Fossils fill...
