Businesses navigating Plover construction, upgrades at Rapids Walmart, The Store news and more
Happy Tuesday and welcome to the Streetwise newsletter!. If you've been through Plover on County B in the last five weeks, you noticed all of the construction barrels, signs and detours. I spent the last couple of weeks talking with business owners along that stretch of highway about how the construction has affected their business, and I talked with village staff, the Plover Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Portage County Business Council to see how they've worked to make sure people know how to get to those businesses. Some places have seen their business drop by almost half of their normal profits, while other places have seen little to no change. Construction will continue through November.
Energy Fair readies for its 5K race
CUSTER – The Midwest Renewable Energy Association will host the Energy Fair’s Rise Up & Race 5K in June at its headquarters in Custer. You can run, jog, skip or walk the 5K course on June 22 before joining others at this year’s Energy Fair where the fun continues all day long. This family friendly race kicks off from the MREA fairgrounds at 7558 Deer Road.
City approves vision for downtown Stevens Point. What changes and projects does the Master Plan prioritize?
STEVENS POINT − Stevens Point commission and council members approved an overall vision for the city's downtown area Tuesday evening at a combined meeting. A draft of the Downtown Targeted Area Master Plan, dated April 25, 2024, was presented by Vandewalle & Associates, a Madison-based planning and redevelopment firm that has worked with the Redevelopment Authority of the city of Stevens Point to create a fuller vision for the downtown area. According to the plan shared with the Common Council, Redevelopment Authority, Plan Commission, Transportation Commission and Park Commission at the Tuesday meeting, the plan looks at a long-term vision and high-level recommendations. It is meant to be a framework with guidelines for planning and future decisions.

(WSAW) - It was one of the warmest Mother’s Days on record in parts of Central Wisconsin, as highs rose into the low 80s in Wausau, while the mid 80s during the afternoon on Sunday in Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point. It was a top 5 warmest holiday in those spots. In the wake of this warm start to the week, a First Alert as winds have turned to the northwest, ushering in wildfire smoke from western Canada. The smoke will cause hazy skies in North Central Wisconsin Sunday night into the day on Monday. If you have health or breathing challenges, you’ll want to limit time outdoors through early Monday evening. In addition, avoid opening windows, as the air outside will not be refreshing, but rather include the smoke from the wildfires.
