A casino family amassed millions in San Bruno. Now, they’re in a bitter civil war
Dennis Sammut knew he was about to die. A deadly pancreatic cancer was eating at the 76-year-old’s gut, and it was time to prepare the family business for his death. This was no small task. Sammut, the no-nonsense grandson of Maltese immigrants, was the third-generation owner of Artichoke Joe’s Casino, a 103-year-old San Bruno institution he grew into one of the Bay Area city’s largest employers — and biggest cash cows.

I’ve come to learn that being a journalist means you will inevitably find yourself writing about a subject that’s largely new to you. It’s part of what was alluring to me starting out as a news reporter a decade ago – tomorrow won’t look the same as today.

The unique setting inspired an atmospheric quality to the album that highlights one of the band’s superpowers: songwriting that conjures a powerful sense of story and place in a sound that melds bluegrass, Americana, roots and more.

Esnaf Draws Fans of Turkish Food to the Peninsula
The cabbage rolls, or lahana sarmasi ($17), at the new Turkish restaurant Esnaf aren’t like the ones my grandmother used to make. The recipe she used was handed down from her mother-in-law, a Ukrainian émigré. She pan-fried golumpki until the skins blistered. The cooks in the busy...

Best Bets: Free Aja Vu Concert And Art Show In Redwood City’S Courthouse Square
Redwood City's Courthouse Square should be a fun place to hang out on Friday, especially if you like classic rock acts like Steely Dan and Chicago. The city's Music on the Square free concert series, which runs 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays through Aug. 30, this week features popular tribute band Aja Vu. The longtime Bay Area group has for years been a topnotch purveyor of Steely Dan's eclectic repertoire (and as any Steely Dan fan knows, those songs are not easy to perform), and recently added Chicago's catalog to its offerings. (Some listings refer to the outfit now as STEEL n Chicago, though the band's website still trumpets the original Aja Vu moniker.)
Los Gatos guitarist to rock San Jose as a Beach Boy this weekend
The Beach Boys came on the scene in 1961, straight outta Hawthorne, California. The group’s songs embodied the myth of a youthful and carefree Southern California existence, one filled with surfboards, cars and pretty girls.
