Driver dead after vehicle plunges over 200-foot cliff along Highway 1 near Devil's Slide
A driver died after his vehicle plunged over a cliff along Highway 1 on the San Francisco Peninsula coast between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay Thursday.The vehicle drove off the roadway just south of Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Montara, plummeting 200 feet, said Cal Fire's San Mateo/Santa Cruz unit. Cal Fire reported the incident just after 1 p.m.A CHP helicopter has since lowered a person onto the rocks where the vehicle landed, Cal Fire said. Multiple agencies were at the scene.Traffic along Highway 1 was impacted as one-way traffic control was in place. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes.CHP later confirmed that the crash was fatal.Cal Fire spokesperson Cecile Juliette said the driver was the only person in the car. It's not known what caused the car to go down the embankment.All lanes of Highway 1 reopened shortly before 5 p.m. according to CHP.

2 arrested in October Half Moon Bay gang-related shootings
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office on Thursday announced two arrests related to alleged gang-related shootings in Half Moon Bay last October. The separate shootings, neither of which injured anyone, were reported on Oct. 21 shortly after midnight on Cypress Avenue near Pilarcitos Avenue and around 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Willow and Pilarcitos Avenues, sheriff's officials said. Investigators eventually identified Orlando Montelongo Chavarin, 18, and John Neves, 19, as suspects in the shooting. Neves was arrested on April 9 in Half Moon Bay and was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, and participation in a criminal street gang, according to the Sheriff's Office. Montelongo Chavarin was already in custody in connection with a shooting from January and was booked for offenses similar to Neves for the October cases. HAYWARD, Calif. - A woman was arrested by Hayward police after more than two decades on the run for the alleged torture of her daughter. Greisy Valencia, 70, was arrested by Hayward police this week for the abuse of her then-11-year-old daughter in 2002. The girl was found wandering the streets of Manteca, covered in scars and burn wounds.
