How University of Toledo's 'Glass City Edition' design came to life
Throughout the 2026 fall sports season, University of Toledo fans have seen plenty of midnight blue and gold all over campus — and maybe a splash of light blue. What the University calls ‘Glass City Blue’ made its debut in warmups at the Rockets’ volleyball match against Oakland on Aug 29. and will be showcased at upcoming men’s and women’s basketball games. Bringing the design concept to life, however, took more than six months, six people in Toledo’s creative department, and a lot of trial and error. “Everyone had been bouncing ideas off of each other my first year here, and the Glass City branding was born out of randomly seeing light blue in our jerseys,” Toledo Assistant Athletic Director of Creative Solutions and Brand Strategy Ellen Holton Donohue said. “Baseball has a pretty iconic light blue, soccer has incorporated it in their jersey, and we kept asking why can’t we incorporate that color more.” Initial inspiration for the design, which features a script ‘Glass City’ on the light blue background, came over the summer when Holton Donohue and Toledo Assistant Director of Graphic Design Jacob Tracy had an idea to look at other schools’ alternate uniform looks as well

$100,000 donation gives Clay engineering students room to grow
Clay High School engineering students often struggled to find enough room to operate robotic arms and 3D printers in their cramped laboratory, senior Carson Burkey, 18, said Thursday. “We didn’t have enough room to use some of our machines,” Mr. Burkey said. “Like our robotic arm, we didn’t have enough room to move it.” A $100,000 donation from Cenovus Toledo Refinery helped change that. Oregon schools and Cenovus Toledo Refinery officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the opening of an expanded engineering laboratory and new computer lab at Clay High School. The expanded facilities provide additional space for the school’s existing engineering classroom. “The new space opens up a lot [of opportunities] because it’s better,” Mr. Burkey said. “It provides us a better way to work on all our stuff.” The expanded space was the result of a partnership between Oregon schools and Cenovus, said Becci Bihn, director of the high school’s career and technology department. The refinery donated $100,000 to renovate the engineering program’s lab space, she said. Ms. Bihn said Oregon schools applied for a state grant in 2023 but was not selected. She remained determined to make the school’s plans a reality. “I went to the superintendent at
