11-year-old Toledo student goes from reluctant writer to published author
Maxwell McCain used to hate writing so much that his teachers enlisted his parents to make sure he finished his essays. Now the 11-year-old Byrnedale Elementary School sixth grader is a published author. “I used to hate writing, but now I like to write,” Maxwell said. “It took me three weeks to write the book. It is a great feeling being published. I think it gave me confidence.” His book, Choose your Words, Keep your Friends , was released on Amazon at a.co/d/085ZHwo9 in August and has sold 97 copies. “My husband Tyrone and I would get messages from Ms. Ericka Stone, his teacher, asking us to get Maxwell to finish his essays,” his mother, Monica McCain, said. “Now he has a book out. It is just crazy.” Mrs. McCain, a special education parent liaison for Toledo Public Schools, said Maxwell took part in the Young Empowered Authors summer program at the Anthem Welcome Center. LeSean Shaw, vice president of programs for EmpoweredAI, a Toledo nonprofit, ran the program. The students learned how to write a book and use software to create illustrations, Mrs. McCain said. “They went through the elements of how to write a story with the kids,”

St. John’s Jesuit opens doors to students with disabilities through new program
When St. John’s Jesuit High School decided to start a new program for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, administrators didn’t have to look far to find students who wanted to get involved. Kelvin Briggs, a junior, signed up to become a mentor to the new students because he said he wants to be of service to a student who needs extra help. “I am looking forward to helping someone out,” Kelvin said. “Being able to bring them into the school and making it feel like home to them will be great.” St. John’s new Gonzaga Scholars program will offer young men with intellectual and developmental disabilities access to the full experience of a St. John’s Jesuit education. Michael Pool, St. John’s president, said the first program participants will be enrolled for the 2027-28 school year. The first cohort will consist of four students entering as freshmen. “Historically, Catholic high schools have not been able to serve those students with disabilities," Mr. Pool said. “For me, being able to offer this program is an extension of our mission to give students a great Catholic education. To have students go out into the world and make a difference.” First of its

Anthony Wayne superintendent retiring; board begins search for successor
Kevin Herman, superintendent of Anthony Wayne schools, plans to retire Aug. 9, 2027, prompting the district’s board of education to begin searching for his successor Monday. “Education has never been just a profession to me. It has been a purpose and a privilege,” Mr. Herman said. “Announcing my retirement was the easy part. Actually submitting the letter and knowing that the end of this chapter is approaching has been more difficult than I ever imagined.” Mr. Herman has been in education for 35 years. He served as a teacher at Edgerton High School, then as a curriculum supervisor at Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center, in Archbold. “I liked working at the service center, but I missed the spirit and being a part of a district,” he said. “I loved elementary education so I became principal at Pike Delta York Elementary School, then principal at Ottawa Hills Elementary School.” Mr. Herman joined Anthony Wayne as assistant superintendent in 2013. After 11 years in that role, he became interim superintendent in August, 2024, after James Fritz took the superintendent position in Oregon schools. He was appointed superintendent in February, 2025. “Education is one of the best fields you can be in,” Mr.
