Charlotte's marathon is sold out. But organizers now face a course correction.

The Charlotte Marathon has a problem that would have seemed enviable not so long ago: Too many people want to run it. Running clubs have multiplied across Charlotte, introducing newcomers to the sport and helping turn marathon morning into something resembling a citywide reunion — and this year, weeks before race day, registration for the Nov. 14 event officially sold out when it hit a record-setting 13,250 runners. Now, under new ownership , organizers are contemplating future growth that could involve perhaps 20,000 participants, more visitors from outside North Carolina and a place among the country’s premier destination races. But between Miles 22 and 24, where the full-marathon course squeezes onto a narrow stretch of greenway connecting NoDa to uptown, Charlotte’s ambitions run into a physical barrier. And that, according to the woman responsible for making the race work, is where ambition encounters reality. “The greenway is our clog point,” says Alaina Williams, who oversees operations for the Charlotte Marathon, noting that the width of the asphalt path is eight feet. “I cannot put any more runners on the greenway. Why Charlotte business leaders say a new airport deal is "critical"

Local business leaders gathered Thursday at the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance in Uptown to express support for the proposed Airline Use and Lease Agreement (AULA) at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Why it matters: The new AULA would launch a $2.1 billion capital development project called CLT Beyond . It would also keep CLT's signatory airlines here for the next 10 and a half years. Between the lines: While the city owns the airport, CLT is financially self-sustaining, meaning airport projects aren't funded by local income or property taxes. What they're saying: On Thursday, Charlotte-based hotelier Vinay Patel described CLT as "critical" to reporters. "It is by far, in my mind personally and I would say should be in everybody's mind, the largest economic development engine, not only Charlotte but our region has," Patel says. "Securing [CLT] and ensuring that it stays relevant, it stays thriving and continues to create jobs and opportunities is critical, not only for the city of Charlotte but the state and the region." Hazelnuts Crêperie’s internationally-inspired treats can soon be found in South End Charlotte. The restaurant is poised to open a new location at 1750 Camden Road, just off West Boulevard, at the Camden Gallery Apartments. Owner Asi Agajan told CharlotteFive he’s aiming for an early 2027 debut. It will mark the crêperie’s second location; the other is on Rea Road in South Charlotte. “We originally started in uptown Charlotte in 2012, where we operated two locations, so we’re especially excited to be returning so close to where it all began,” Agajan said. Hazelnuts Crêperie offers both sweet and savory crêpes alongside espresso drinks from local roaster Enderly Coffee Co . Mecklenburg, Discovery Place reach ‘tentative' nature museum deal, manager says

Mecklenburg County has reached a tentative agreement with Discovery Place to settle a dispute over a revamped south Charlotte nature museum. But some county commissioners still have reservations. County Manager Mike Bryant told commissioners at their Thursday meeting the nonprofit museum group is now able to pay back almost $14 million owed to the county within five years. The debt stems from about $14.6 million the county agreed to lend Discovery Place in early 2024 to help cover the construction of a revamped nature museum in Freedom Park . The county owns the property and facility on Sterling Road near the Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods. Discovery Place has long operated the museum. The money was due to the county in late October, but Bryant informed commissioners at an Oct. 6 meeting that Discovery Place couldn’t make the payment. Commissioners expressed dismay with the situation, threatening to take control of the museum’s operations and hold Discovery Place in default for the money. Board chair Mark Jerrell formed an ad hoc committee to figure out what the county was willing to agree to, and that group asked county staff to explore an independent financial review of Discovery Place’s operations, assets and
