Major delays on I-85 after crash injures 1 in Gaston County

At least one person was injured in a serious crash on Interstate 85 in Gastonia on Thursday morning, officials confirmed. The crash happened on I-85 South just south of Exit 19. NCDOT initially said two lanes were closed, but crews were forced to shut down the entire highway. A Gaston County official confirmed at least one person was hurt and taken to the hospital.

Police said a Crime Stoppers tip on Thursday, Nov. 5, prompted traffic stops in the Freedom Division, resulting in two arrests and eventually leading officers to search a home and arrest a third suspect.

Charlotte high school basketball coach charged with indecent liberties with minor

West Mecklenburg boys basketball coach Chris Ewell was arrested Thursday, and faces multiple felony charges, including sexual activity with a student at the school. The victim is 17, and she was drinking alcohol provided by the coach when the incident happened, according to an arrest warrant. Ewell’s charges include: felony sexual activity with a student; felony indecent liberties with a student; and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to an arrest warrant. “The allegations arose after text messages were located on the victim’s iPad by a third party person, discussing that she had gone to the suspect’s residence, ... drank alcohol, and that the victim and suspect engaged in sexual contact,” an affidavit reports. “The messages also discussed the victim and suspect kissing on prior occasions, while on school grounds. ... Investigators responded to the school and ... the victim confirmed she had been communicating with the suspect in an inappropriate manner, outside of school, via text. The victim further disclosed she and the suspect met in person, on the night of 10/10/2026, after the suspect arranged for an Uber to pick her up from a friend’s house and take her to his residence.” The teen gave

Telecommunications companies have reported sharp rises in the amount of copper wire thefts. So far this year, AT&T reports more than 700 incidents of copper wire thefts - more than all of 2025.

I-77 lanes to close near Lake Norman for construction of a 10-lane bridge

Beginning Monday, crews will install temporary single-lane closures on Interstate 77 near N.C. 150 exit 36 in Mooresville for construction of a 10-lane bridge, state highway officials said Friday. The closures will allow Charlotte-based contractor Blythe Development to build a new safety barrier wall and add pavement markings, according to a news release by the N.C. Department of Transportation. “Once those are installed, traffic will shift from the median to the outside lanes while crews begin building interior bridge bents,” according to the news release. Officials didn’t say how long the closures will last. Project will ease congestion, NCDOT says The Lake Norman-area closures are part of a $249 million project to improve the I-77/N.C. 150 interchange and widen N.C. 150 from N.C. 16 in Catawba County to the U.S. 21/N.C. 150 interchange in Mooresville. “The improvements will accommodate growing traffic volumes and ease congestion,” officials said. Construction began last year with crews improving storm drainage, installing utilities and moving traffic signals, according to NCDOT. “Bridge construction will be broken into multiple phases, and traffic will be maintained on the existing lanes of N.C. 150 at all times,” according to Friday’s statement. This historic Kings Mountain mill could soon become apartments

A historic Kings Mountain mill that was originally opened in the late 1800s by one of the town's founders could soon be transformed into luxury apartments. The Kings Mountain City Council voted 6-1 to rezone the historic Phenix Mill property from light industrial to semi-urban residential. The change allows a developer to turn the building into apartments. Councilman Tyler Fletcher was the sole dissenting vote. Originally known as the Dilling Cotton Mill, it was built by Freno Dilling around 1892. The property is located on Phenix Street with U.S. 74 to the north and bordered by Norfolk Southern railroad tracks along the northwest. Brad Lagano, city planning director, said the property is just under 10 acres and the semi-urban residential designation fits with the surrounding area. Many of the homes near the building are former mill village houses. According to Cleveland County property records, the land is valued at $124,000. Lagano said the Dilling Mill operated for 50 years until it was purchased by Burlington Industries and renamed Phenix Mill in 1940.
