Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar recently signed a proclamation recognizing Sunday, November 1, as Retired Educators Day in the city, and members of the Bulloch County Retired Educators Association were on hand to accept the signed document. The recognition honors the more than 145,000 retired educators across Georgia. Each year, the state sets aside the first Sunday in November to celebrate the men and women who spent their careers in the classroom and who continue to shape their communities long after their final bell. Many retired educators remain active in the places they once taught. Across the state, they give thousands of hours of volunteer service, supporting schools, churches, civic groups, and neighbors in need. For those who spent decades teaching local children, the work of serving the community does not end at retirement. It simply takes a new form. Members of the Bulloch County Retired Educators Association accepted the proclamation on behalf of the local educators who have given their time and talent to Bulloch County students over the years. The association brings together retired teachers, administrators, and school staff who stay connected to one another and to the community they served. The proclamation is the city’s way of saying

The Bulloch County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved two conditional use requests for surface mining operations near Register during its Tuesday evening, November 3, meeting, following extensive public discussion about potential impacts on nearby residents and roads. Vice Chairman Anthony Simmons presided over the meeting in the absence of Chairman David Bennett . The applications, submitted by Commissioner Timmy Rushing and his wife, Julie Rushing , involve two adjoining properties totaling approximately 38.41 acres on Dekle Road, with access through Triple T Road. The requests would allow natural resource development, specifically surface mining, on properties currently zoned AG-5 (Agricultural 5 Acres). Rushing recused himself from consideration of both applications, which were approved 4-0 with conditions. Several residents spoke against the proposals, raising concerns about heavy truck traffic, deterioration of Triple T Road, drinking water infrastructure, dust, noise and the potential impact on surrounding properties. One resident who operates a water system serving the New Hope community expressed concern about a water line crossing beneath Triple T Road. The resident explained that the road already experiences erosion and drainage problems, which could worsen with the addition of loaded commercial trucks. Other residents questioned whether existing property easements would provide sufficient access
The candidates who won election in Georgia on Tuesday have made big promises to voters that many Black residents of Augusta want to see fulfilled. Democrat Jon Ossoff will return to his U.S. Senate seat as part of the sweeping victory his party won on Tuesday, taking control of the House and Senate. Ossoff has stated he will lower housing costs. In 2025, he launched an investigation into large corporations and out-of-state companies buying up properties and passing on higher home and rental prices. The investigation contributed to the passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. The act aims to make housing more affordable by helping communities to build and preserve more homes. It also created a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) home loan program for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and medical first responders.
