Humane Society of Statesboro and Bulloch County and Fixing the Boro receive $40,000 grant
The Humane Society of Statesboro Bulloch County (HSSBC) and Fixing the Boro were recently awarded a grant from the Georgia Department of Agriculture in the total of $40,000 for Bulloch County. Each grant was awarded separately, with HSSBC receiving $25,000 and Fixing the Boro receiving $15,000. The grant is part of the Dog and Cat Sterilization Grant Program, which provides financial assistance with sterilization procedures. The Department hopes that grant funds will ease the burden of sterilization procedures and increase the number of dogs and cats sterilized in Georgia. Football Participates In APEX Summer Program
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern football took part in a summer programming sponsored by APEX to help learn personal management skills while also participating in community service events around the Bulloch County area over the last two months. There were seven sessions total, including five educational sessions covering topics of brand creation, NIL (name, image and likeness), money management, interviewing and social media skills as well as a networking luncheon. 5th annual Back the Teacher Bash was a great success
Restoring the Breach, along with The Button, Pink Huddle, and the Youth Career Camp, recently held their 5th annual Back the Teacher Bash at the Outreach Center in Statesboro. All educators in the neighboring counties of Bulloch, Evans, and Candler were invited to attend. Teachers were able to stock up on school supplies and decor, along with brand new household items donated by the Walmart Distribution Center. LaShai Campbell, Co-Founder of Restoring the Breach, says the event went great with over 100 teachers in attendance. Overall input on the event was positive, with one attendee sharing, "I feel like the supplies will definitely help me as a fairly new teacher and it will help me to provide some supplies to students who may not be able to afford them." Campbell says, “I would love to honorably mention our sponsors: Walmart, Coca-Cola, Amerigroup, and Clemons Family Practice. Thank you so much for promoting us!”
Another record-setting fundraising year closes for Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation in FY24
The Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation and the Department of Athletics announced record-setting fundraising numbers for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Scam Alert: Scam phone calls about voter registration have been reported
With election season in full throttle, local residents may receive scam calls and messages asking about voter registration and requesting personal information. Here in Bulloch County, some residents are receiving phone calls stating that their registration has expired and then referring them to another number to call and text to be reinstated. Do not give them your information. While third-party organizations have access to some of your information, they don't have the most up-to-date sources and may not be acting in your best interest. "If you aren't sure about something, call us first so that we can verify and check if your voter registration is still current," said Joanne Nesmith, Clerk at Bulloch County's Elections and Voter Registration Office. BOE tentatively approves millage rate of 7.932, Three public hearings scheduled for August
The Bulloch County Board of Education tentatively approved the adoption of the 2024 Tax Digest and M&O Millage Rate for FY25, at 7.932 mills. This is a decrease from last year's millage rate of 8.478, but an increase of .374 mill over the rollback rate set this year. This increase is necessary to maintain the 14-mill requirement that secures the school's equalization funding.
