In the race for the 4th District seat on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, Ted Gaines is ahead with 54.2% of the vote as of 10 p.m. Gina Posey had about 45.5% of the vote, according to unofficial early results from El Dorado County. The 4th District includes suburban communities near Highway 50 and several rural foothill communities in northern El Dorado County. The winning candidate will replace outgoing Supervisor Lori Parlin and will join a board focused on cutting costs, boosting revenue and mitigating wildfire risks. Measure S early results: El Dorado County voters rejecting hospital, wildfire tax

A proposed 30-year sales tax increase to fund hospital improvements, emergency response and wildfire prevention in El Dorado County fell short of majority support in early unofficial election night returns Tuesday. As of 10 p.m., Measure S had 66.6% “no” votes and 33.4% “yes” votes, according to unofficial results from the El Dorado County Elections Department . The initial results included ballots mailed before Election Day, with more votes left to be counted. The measure needed a simple majority to pass. The proposal would increase the county’s sales tax by three-eighths of a cent for 30 years , generating an estimated $13 million annually. The additional revenue would fund hospital improvements, local fire agencies and nonprofit organizations conducting wildfire-prevention work. During the first full fiscal year, 50% of the money would go to eligible hospitals, 45% to fire agencies and 5% to qualifying nonprofits. In subsequent years, the hospital’s share would be tied to debt payments for qualifying projects. Marshall Medical Center, which operates Marshall Hospital in Placerville, helped develop the proposal. The hospital, the only acute care hospital on the county’s West Slope, said it needed about $40 million for upgrades to meet state seismic standards. If approved, Measure

Rodent enters Sacramento restaurant during health inspection. What else was found?

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to a soul food restaurant after finding about rodent droppings throughout the facility in addition to the live rodent. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 29, through Wednesday, Nov. 4. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . Democrat declares win, Republican doesn't concede in Sacramento-area Assembly race

Democrat Amy Slavensky declared victory Friday evening in the competition for a Sacramento County Assembly seat over Republican incumbent Josh Hoover. Her lead grew to 53.1% of the vote for the 7th Assembly District after the county released updated results earlier in the day. They are separated by more than 7,000 ballots. “I’m ready to go to work for the people, no matter who they are, where they come from, or who they voted for, because that’s how I serve and that’s the job,” she said in a statement. But Hoover said he was not ready to concede. “I just think it’s way too early,” he said. “We want to let the elections officials do their job.” The district includes Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova and has 14,000 more Democrats than Republicans. Yet Hoover has held the seat since he upset a Democratic incumbent in 2022. The contest is one of several Democrats are hoping to flip so they can expand their supermajority in the Legislature. The seat overlaps with parts of the 6th Senate District, where Republican incumbent Roger Niello, R-Fair Oaks, is only leading by a slim margin . Sacramento County election officials will release more results

Sacramento-area headlines: a CSU labor deal and deadly car crash near Galt

From labor talks at California’s largest public university system to a Halloween costume controversy and a deadly rural crash, here’s a roundup of recent Sacramento-area news. The California State University system reached a tentative agreement with the CSU Employees Union , which represents about 14,500 staff including custodians, nurses and IT specialists. The deal includes a salary step system and a $3,575 bonus in December, with members voting by Nov. 17, even as the faculty union prepares for a possible strike. The Onyx Club in Roseville said it kicked out a man wearing a Nazi armband on Halloween night after a customer complained, pushing back against social media accusations that staff had tolerated the costume. The bar said the man had concealed the armband under a jacket when he entered and was removed after an altercation with another customer. A driver was killed and a 32-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child were seriously injured in a crash Tuesday evening on Alta Mesa Road near Galt. The California Highway Patrol said the Honda Pilot driver turned left into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado about 6:50 p.m.; the pickup driver suffered minor injuries. The Becerra era and Raman’s ‘earthquake’ in LA

TRANSITION BEGINS — In the five months between Xavier Becerra ’s come-from-behind primary victory and his general election win, he and his circle could deflect questions about his coming administration. California can only have one governor at a time, they said, and he wasn’t taking anything for granted. But now that voters have officially made him their next governor, everyone in Sacramento is racing to get some answers about what comes next: Who will Becerra hire and appoint? Which interest groups will be ascendant? What policies will he prioritize? The lobbyists, union officials and legislative leaders at his victory party offer some hints. Among the VIP’s circulating in West Sacramento were Becerra team members, including campaign hands Robbie Abelon, Kyle Layman and Lindsey Cobia — an erstwhile top Gavin Newsom deputy — and unofficial counselors like Arsenio Mataka, a former aide from Becerra’s attorney general days who focused on environmental issues. As we’ve noted elsewhere , Becerra’s sphere also includes adviser Courtni Pugh, longtime aide Liz Saldivar, veteran politico Karen Skelton, and policy adviser Nicole Elliott (another Newsom alum). Some of Sacramento’s most powerful interest groups did not endorse Becerra until it was evident he’d prevail. That made his early
