Traffic signal to be added at Athens intersection

The City of Athens Public Works Department has announced the installation of a new traffic signal in town. Contractor crews are working on installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Old Riceville Road and West Madison Avenue. The affected area includes the intersections of Old Riceville Road at W. Madison Avenue and Old Riceville Road at Rocky Mount Road. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 a.m. and continuing until Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. there will be flaggers present for intermittent lanes closures with traffic down to one lane, and intermittent temporary full closures. There will be no lane closures during school drop off and pick up times. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, such as the Dennis Street overpass. Motorists traveling through this area are advised to use extreme caution and watch for traffic signage, workers and pedestrians. Motorists should allow additional travel time due to potential traffic delays in the area. For more information, contact the office of the public works department at 423-744-2745.

Cherokee County approves intersection improvement project

Improvements are coming to a congested intersection in east Cherokee County. On Tuesday, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to award a $1,754,149 construction services agreement to R&B Developer, Inc. to improve the intersection of Holbrook Campground Road and Midway Road. This intersection is located about two miles south of Highway 20 in eastern Cherokee County. Holbrook Campground Road is a two-lane roadway that runs between Highway 20 and the Fulton County line. Midway Road is a two-lane roadway that runs between Holbrook Campground Road, eventually becoming Windward Parkway in Fulton County. The intersection is a "badly skewed 'T' intersection" with a single stop on Midway Road, according to the county, and experiences congestion in the peak periods in the morning and afternoon. This project will "correct intersection geometry," change the through movement to Midway Road and make stormwater drainage improvements, Cherokee County Manager Geoff Morton said Tuesday. Construction is expected to be completed about 180 days after the notice to proceed is issued to the contractor. The project is funded by Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds and is the first capital improvement project to be constructed under the referendum, Morton said. Cobb unveils microtransit expansion to parts of Mableton, Kennesaw and Acworth

Cobb County officials unveiled the county’s microtransit service expansion Thursday morning, bringing the on-demand service to new areas of the county. The microtransit service, known as CobbLinc Go, is operated by Via Transportation and uses minivans that can carry up to five passengers. Riders request the service through an app, similar to services like Uber and Lyft. It’s available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CobbLinc Go officially launched in late 2024 with service starting in south Cobb as part of a two-year pilot program with an option for a third year. The service averaged nearly 2,400 trips per month during its first 19 months and reached 3,628 trips in April 2026, compared with about 640 monthly trips under the former FLEX service, per the county. Rides on CobbLinc Go are priced at $2.50 per trip, the same as a bus fare. The expansion, which the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved in August, adds service areas in northwest Mableton and creates pilot zones in parts of Acworth and Kennesaw. Fosters Bend Road report clears path for spring rehab

Floyd County is moving closer to rehabilitating Fosters Bend Road after soil and pavement testing confirmed its previous concerns about the road’s structure. The geotechnical report showed the road has a high clay content, little rock base and varying depths of asphalt that make a single rehabilitation approach difficult. Assistant Public Works Director Ben Brooks updated the Floyd County Public Utilities and Transportation Committee Wednesday, outlining the project’s next steps. “We will get a bid package out, hopefully before the end of this year, to have the full-depth reclamation done hopefully next spring and we will come in behind them and pave the entirety of that road,” Brooks said. The project is intended to address recurring pavement failures along a road that began as an old farm route and was not originally constructed to support modern heavy truck traffic. The Floyd County Commission hired Ahlberg Engineering in early July to perform geotechnical testing and soil-cement design work as part of the county’s 2026 Local Road Assistance Administration funding.
