Cowboys VP backs Dak Prescott despite lack of contract extension

Despite not extending quarterback Dak Prescott, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones insists that brass still believes he can deliver a Super Bowl to Dallas.

"Absolutely. I mean, I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship," Jones said Monday on Sirius XM Mad Dog Sports Radio. "He's got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship."

Prescott, going into the final year of his contract, has made three Pro Bowls in eight seasons and thrown 202 touchdowns, the second most in franchise history behind Tony Romo (248) . However, his playoff failures overshadow those accomplishments.

Prescott is 2-5 in the playoffs. Last season, he threw two interceptions and posted an abysmal 42.9 QBR in a 48-32 home wild-card round loss to the Green Bay Packers.

"And, you know, we're hanging around the rim," Jones said of the playoff failures. "We've just gotta go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it in. We're hanging around the rim. We just gotta get the job done."

The Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl or made an NFC Championship Game in 28 years. And now the future of the most important position on the team could become murky.

The Cowboys and Prescott appear to be far from reaching an agreement. During a recent appearance on "SportsCenter," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said contract negotiations "have been described as passive or even nonexistent."

Prescott's contract contains a no-trade and no-tag clause, meaning he holds more leverage. Still, the Cowboys may want to see the 30-year-old carry the team on a deep playoff run before giving him a new deal.

That will be more difficult for Prescott after Dallas failed to make significant roster improvements this offseason. In free agency, it let running back Tony Pollard (Tennessee Titans) and offensive tackle Tyron Smith (New York Jets) leave.
