It's been a mild fall in Whatcom County. That's about to change

Get set for a wet and windy weekend, along with a few power outages and coastal flooding, as storms are lining up to batter Western Washington after a drier than normal October. Gusty south winds will increase late Thursday into Friday, with the strongest breezes from Everett northward, National Weather Service meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch said Tuesday in the online forecast discussion. ”Due to continued foliage on the trees, localized power outages may be possible during this period. Snow levels remain higher Friday into Sunday, mainly 5,000 to 8,000 feet, for high-elevation mountain snowfall. Furthermore, seas rise towards 15 to 20 feet Friday, and will need to monitor high surf concerns along the coast,” DeFlitch said. A wind advisory issued for 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday calls for south winds at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph for western Whatcom County. About a half-inch to an inch of rain is possible through Friday night in the lowlands, with heavy rain Friday and again Saturday night into Sunday as a second storm arrives. “Moderate to heavy rain may lead to roadway ponding and minor nuisance flooding of poor drainage areas, creating difficult commute conditions,” the National Weather Service

Seattle voters continue lifting sales tax to among nation's highest

(The Center Square) - Seattle voters approved the city’s latest levy on Tuesday, with 72.6% backing a proposal to double the transit sales tax rate, costing another $29 annually for a two-person household. King County is processing the remaining votes , but the levy is anticipated to pass and would increase the city’s transit sales tax rate from 0.15% to 0.3%. The current rate expires in 2027, and city officials say the 10-year renewal will raise $138 million annually, doubling the cost for a median two-person household to $58 . The levy would lift Seattle’s sales tax rate to 10.8% in 2027, continuing the trend of the city having among the highest sales tax rate nationwide. "This measure will deliver the largest expansion of transit service in our city's history, double the low-income transit passes available to Seattleites, and provide resources for faster and more reliable service.” Mayor Katie Wilson said in a statement Tuesday night. “Together, these investments make transit, our most affordable and sustainable transportation option, an even more irresistible choice.” Charles Prestrud, director of transportation policy at the Washington Policy Center, disagrees. He said his analysis — dividing the $138 million by the city’s 393,135 households —

From LA to NYC, democratic socialists move on City Hall

A new political trend is taking hold in some of America’s biggest cities: Democratic socialists are winning mayor’s offices. Nithya Raman’s victory in Los Angeles on Thursday, Nov. 5, adds the nation’s second-largest city to a growing list. Once she takes office, the mayors of New York City, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., will all be members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Seattle’s mayor also identifies as a democratic socialist. Their agendas differ, but they share some big priorities: building more affordable housing, expanding child care and public transportation, strengthening renter protections and raising taxes on corporations and wealthy residents to help pay for public services. Here’s a look at the democratic socialists leading, or preparing to lead, major U.S. cities. More: 'I want him to be a great mayor': Mamdani-Trump bromance continues New York City: Zohran Mamdani Zohran Mamdani became one of the country’s most prominent elected democratic socialists after winning the New York City mayoral race last year.
