NMU permanently shuts down saunas, citing costly health and safety concerns
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Due to ongoing costs and safety concerns, Northern Michigan University (NMU) Recreation Sports is shutting down one of its most uniquely-U.P. amenities: the saunas. The announcement came the same day as the beginning of its permanent closure on Tuesday, May 5. NMU Rec Sports attributed the closure to the facilities' significant wear, requiring "extensive repairs" estimated to cost from $50,000 to $100,000. Without these fixes, the university said they're unable to ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment. Maintenance funding is being directed towards other core programs and spaces that "have the potential to benefit a larger portion of the NMU student and campus community." The university also mentioned multiple health and safety incidents int he saunas, including medical emergencies and misuse of the space via "unauthorized access and inappropriate behavior." "NMU Rec Sports remains committed to offering a wide range of programs, services, and facilities that support the health and well-being of our campus community, and we’d be happy to review those with individuals, as needed," read the Rec Sports Department's statement. "We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we prioritize how to provide the most positive recreational sports experience for all." COPYRIGHT 2026
