MAPS has now secured a $60 million bond for security and infrastructure upgrades for all facilities, including athletics and the bus garage. The proposal was asking for a levy of approximately 1.55 mills. This means a home worth $100,000 of taxable value would pay almost $155 per year.MAPS Superintendent Zack Sedgwick says there is a need to upgrade the infrastructure of many of the district’s buildings.“We have a great need, as you’ve probably heard me speak about in the past, over 750,000 square feet of building, average age is 60 years old. Many of those spaces and systems that you don’t necessarily see and the spaces that you do see, have not been updated, and our newest buildings are over 30 years old,” Sedgwick said.Sedgwick says they do improvement projects annually, but the upgrades coming from this bond proposal will take some time.“Projects of this size take quite a bit of time to start to execute. We’ve done much of the preliminary planning for implementing, but the details, the drawings, the execution of the plan is going to take some time. So, we’re looking at the summer of 2027 for actually breaking ground on the bond projects,” Sedgwick said.The biggest projects will be at Bothwell Middle School.“The 40 percent investment at Bothwell is the biggest chunk of the proposal, and that will allow us to do a complete renovation of our second floor. We’re actually going to build a small addition which will allow us to move students so we can continue construction within the school year and not just in the summer months because it’s such a large scale,” Sedgwick said.The other major investment from the bond proposal will go to Marquette Senior High School, roughly 29 percent of the $60 million.The video above will feature the TV6 livestream until staff can clip the corresponding story, if available, from broadcasts or other TV6 content.
