Menominee's pitching prowess pushes Maroons to District title
GLADSTONE — Gladstone may have held home field advantage but Menominee simply had the better team as the Maroons blasted the Braves 10-0 to capture the MHSAA Division 3 District 66 baseball championship on Friday. Pitching was central to Menominee’s success, as a trio of hurlers made life miserable for both the Braves and Iron Mountain, whom the Maroons downed in the semifinal round to earn the right to square off with Gladstone in Friday’s marquee bout. Menominee narrowly out-hit Gladstone by a 5-4 margin but errors proved too costly for the Braves to overcome, as four of the Maroons’ 10 runs were results of miscues in the field. Urijah Linsmeier and Aiden Beal combined to turn in a masterful performance on the mound, with Linsemier collecting the win after spinning five-and-two-thirds innings of four hit ball before turning the rosin bag over to Beal, who recorded Menominee’s third and final out in the top of the sixth inning. Garrett Carlson got Menominee off and running with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first before coming around to score off a liner into left field by Robert Finger. Finger scored on Gladstone’s first error of the afternoon and just

Two U.P. students elevate their game and minds with National Invention Convention qualification
BARAGA, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Two third grade students are taking their basketball-themed invention to the national level. Adelyn Wilson and Allie Johnston - two students at Baraga Area Schools - will be attending the National Invention Convention at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn to showcase their invention “Magic Footsteps” - a pad designed to help young basketball players improve their layups. The duo will be the first students from the Upper Peninsula to attend the competition at the national level. “Both of them play basketball in the younger grades as well, and that was their problem. They struggled with their layups, and so they wanted to fix that. They started with a, literally a paper drawing that they laid out on the floor and that they literally walked on and practiced where they put their feet in order to do a layup,” explained Ashlee Adams, a STEAM teacher at Baraga who worked with the girls on their project. “From there, they made a foam pad with feet on it. That was the second prototype they made, and then their third prototype was the same foam pad, but they added in beepers so you could, instead of

GLADSTONE — The Menominee and Gladstone High School baseball teams took a trip to Splitsville as the Maroons and Braves divided a Great Northern Conference doubleheader on Friday. Gladstone edged the Maroons 11-9 in the matinee outing before Menominee salvaged a split with a 4-1victory in the nightcap. Menominee struck first in game one after Tyler Bouty plated Nate Nelson with an RBI-single while Dylan Beal stole home and Garrett Carlson scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. Gladstone seized a one-run lead thanks to a two-RBI triple off the bat of Vinny Rebholz in the bottom of the frame before the Maroons responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second, the second of which came after Beal scored on a wild pitch, to make it a 5-4 contest. Menominee stayed in front by one until the bottom of the fifth when Xavier Leipzig drove in three with a triple to right field to push the Braves ahead 9-6. Gladstone added a pair of crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to withstand a late comeback charge by Menominee. Nelson got the Maroons’ rally started with a two-run triple
