Darlington's repeat road quite bumpy
The celebrations ended months ago. Now, what Darlington School boys basketball coach Nathan West put in front of his Tigers as defending GHSA Private boys state champions looks like a championship game each and every night. That would include a preseason scrimmage Darlington played on Halloween afternoon at Van Es Arena against a solid south Georgia name on the hardwood, Tift County High. The Tigers won 61-56 giving the home crowd an advanced look at what Darlington plans to show several others all the way to March. “That’s in the past. That’s history,” said West about Darlington’s first-ever state championship win in boys basketball — 53-50 over Holy Innocents’ at the Macon Coliseum — to end the Tigers’ season at 30-2. “It’s a new year. We have a new group. We have guys playing different roles. We have to put the history behind us and get focused on this year. I thought (the scrimmage) was a good start to that.” West only lost three senior starters, two of which signed to play college basketball: Christian Teasley and Cam Selig. The other was Brent Bell. Our high school theatre programs and students won top honors at regional One Act Play competitions, including a region championship win for Sequoyah High School! Norcross fighting for playoffs in game at surging Duluth
Norcross’ defense of its position in the state football playoff race is at the forefront of Friday night’s rivalry game with Duluth, which is playing its best late in the season. Heading into the regular-season finale, Norcross sits at No. 29 in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings and among the 32 teams who will qualify for state. A loss to No. 42 Duluth would give the Blue Devils a losing record and would put their playoff hopes in great peril. Norcross has won 18 straight games in the longtime rivalry, including 35-21 last season. Its last loss to the Wildcats came in 2003, well before the current players were born. Maintaining that streak looks tougher with how Duluth has played of late, including back-to-back wins over Hebron Christian and Berkmar. Though the Wildcats lost 40-34 in double overtime to Peachtree Ridge last week, they show considerable moxie in a second-half comeback. Down 21-0 at halftime, they outscored Peachtree Ridge 27-6 over the final two quarters to force OT. There were no shortage of offensive stars for Duluth in that loss.
