Summit closure this weekend kicks off broader street transformation
Until the late 1990s, Summit Street north of Cherry Street was a primary route linking downtown Toledo to I-280 at the Craig Memorial Bridge, and its importance once extended even farther through Point Place into Michigan. But its five-lane width through Toledo’s Vistula neighborhood became anachronistic with Greenbelt Parkway’s construction and then the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway’s 2007 opening. The latter severed Summit’s last direct connection to I-280. This weekend, the city of Toledo plans to take a first step toward shrinking it to fit its current traffic volume while making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to use and cross. Summit is scheduled to be closed Saturday between Cherry and Bush streets, and when it reopens it will have one through lane each way plus makeshift median islands and left-turn lanes. The median’s creation will include eliminating left turns to and from Sycamore, Cedar, Elm, and Mulberry streets, the city announced Wednesday afternoon. The changes to that part of Summit are part of a longer-term city program to downsize Summit all the way from Cherry Street to Point Place. That program includes reconstruction begun early this year between Galena Street and New York Avenue to convert four lanes to

Halfway to deadline to eliminate traffic deaths, Toledo has work to do
Toledo set an ambitious goal in 2021 to eliminate all traffic fatalities by 2031. The city is now halfway to its deadline, with traffic fatalities continuing to decrease but significant progress still needed to reach zero. “It’s important to remember that Vision Zero is not about eliminating all crashes, but making improvements to mitigate those that result in the most serious, life-altering injuries and fatalities,” said Stephanie Bartlett, the city’s commissioner of traffic management. Vision Zero is a national initiative that encourages communities to eliminate preventable traffic fatalities and severe injuries among road users. Eighty-two communities across the United States have taken the pledge, according to Vision Zero data. In Ohio, only Toledo and Columbus have signed on to the initiative. Personal choices can help prevent crashes and serious injuries, Ms. Bartlett said, such as wearing a seat belt, obeying the speed limit, and putting away distractions such as cell phones. The city is addressing other risks through road design, crosswalk improvements, and dedicated bike lanes. “Our goal is to add elements of safety into all the city projects,” Ms. Bartlett said. “Even making small upgrades like crosswalk improvements, sidewalk connections make a difference in how people perceive traffic safety

Road Warrior: Traffic shift on Summit; traffic glitch on Hill
A major traffic change is scheduled Tuesday as the Summit Street reconstruction north of Galena Street reaches its halfway point. Sometime early in the day, city officials expect contractor Gerken Paving to open the rebuilt southbound lane and close the northbound side for rebuilding. The switch will allow side streets on the northwest side of the street to reopen, while vehicles to and from businesses and parks on the Maumee River side will have to wade through a work zone for most of the rest of the year. This includes restoring New York Avenue to through traffic. But the most important change is that all traffic through the work zone will flip from northbound to southbound. Heading downtown from Point Place on Summit is possible again, but going to the Point now involves either Manhattan Boulevard or I-75. The posted detour will use the Manhattan option, via I-280 from Galena. The Toledo Department of Transportation expects the new traffic pattern to be in place for about two months, or until late October. **** A city project to resurface, beautify, and curb speeding on Executive Parkway in West Toledo will start Monday. Traffic will be reduced to one lane each way

Fuel spill shuts down Ohio Turnpike access at Ohio 53
Editor's note: This story has been updated. Access to the Ohio Turnpike at Ohio 53 was shut down as of 11 a.m. Aug. 20 after a fuel spill. It was reopened at various points later in the day to accommodate the cleanup, but was expected to be finished by the evening of Aug. 20. Fremont Assistant Chief Dave Zimmerman reported the fire department was called out to the Ohio 53 roundabout and turnpike access around 10:30 a.m. They estimated around 50 or more gallons of diesel fuel was spilled, and the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike Commission have been contacted to aid with the cleanup. Zimmerman reported that vehicles can exit the turnpike at Ohio 53, but only travel south. Ohio 53 was closed north and south of the Ohio Turnpike at CR 89 and CR 119, where vehicles had to detour. The assistant fire chief said there was a hit-and-run accident at the roundabout, but the involved vehicles were gone when first responders arrived. ODOT assisted with the cleanup, using materials to absorb the fuel. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Sandusky County Sheriff and ODOT assisted at the scene.
