Old West End shooting lawsuit may be just the beginning, lawyers say
Lawyers for the man suing the city of Toledo and Lucas County for wrongful arrest after the Old West End Festival shooting said Thursday they have now heard from others alleging wrongful prosecutions in Toledo. Alex Bodiford, the Akron-based lawyer representing Eljay Crisp-Carr, said during a news conference on the Lucas County Courthouse steps that one goal of the $20 million federal lawsuit Crisp-Carr and his mother filed Wednesday is to stop what they believe is a pattern of civil-rights violations by Toledo police and the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office. “We want to make sure this egregious behavior doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Mr. Bodiford said. Crisp-Carr and his mother, April Carr, stood quietly flanking the lawyers, with Ms. Carr speaking only to confirm that the red tracksuit her son wore during the news conference was the same outfit he wore June 6 when his truck broke down in the 2000 block of Glenwood Avenue. Mr. Bodiford said that of those who had contacted his office between the lawsuit’s filing Wednesday and the noontime event Thursday, “some we deem very credible” and further investigation is warranted. Editorial: Mistaken arrest in mass shooting
The mass shooting June 6 at the Old West End Festival wounded 12 people and terrorized Toledo until the quick arrest of two suspects appeared to move the story from crime to punishment. That assumption came to a screeching halt Friday. All charges against 20-year-old Eljay Crisp-Carr were dropped, and he was released from Lucas County jail. Evidence from Crisp-Carr’s cell phone proved his precise location at the time of the shooting was in the 2000 block of Glenwood Avenue, not at the festival site — as the defendant had claimed from the start. Read more Blade editorials Crisp-Carr had been charged with 25 counts of attempted murder, 26 counts of felonious assault, and other charges connected to gang activity and a probation violation for a previous gun crime conviction. Because the charges against him were so serious, Crisp-Carr was held without bail from his arrest June 11 to his release Friday. Crisp-Carr was mistakenly identified as the shooter by Toledo Police detectives from cell phone photos showing a masked man with the same hairstyle as Crisp-Carr. 10-year-old pedestrian hospitalized after North Toledo crash
A 10-year-old sustained several injuries after being hit by a pickup while crossing a North Toledo street, police said. According to a police report, several children were crossing Manhattan Boulevard at Mulberry Street around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Johnny Turner, 70, of Toledo, was driving eastbound on Manhattan and struck a 10-year-old, who police say lives in the 3400 block of Mulberry, as he ran across the street at the crosswalk. Police said it appeared Mr. Turner had the green light while the children crossed Manhattan. The child was thrown several feet in the air and sustained several broken bones and facial injuries, police said. He was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. Neither Mr. Turner nor his 9-year-old passenger were injured, according to the report.

According to its Facebook page, the bread is baked daily, the salads and sauces are made using local ingredients, and the cookies are baked from scratch. New authority takes shape for Timbers Town Center redevelopment
A new community authority overseeing the $89 million redevelopment of the former Shops at Fallen Timbers in Maumee has approved an agreement outlining responsibility for maintaining streets and sidewalks at the shopping center. The Timbers Town Center Community Authority’s seven-member board of trustees approved the infrastructure maintenance agreement at its organizational meeting Thursday, along with bylaws and other measures establishing how the authority will operate. Under the agreement, the city would take over the development’s streets and sidewalks, while the developer would remain responsible for their upkeep. The authority could help cover some of those maintenance costs. The agreement comes as Timbers Town Center Ltd., a consortium of developers with ties to Columbus’ Easton Town Center, prepares to revitalize the struggling shopping center. The group purchased the property in July for $17.3 million and plans to invest approximately $89 million, including the acquisition cost, in the redevelopment. Plans include repairing deteriorating streets and sidewalks, attracting new retail and restaurant tenants, and potentially adding about 230 apartments. Much of the redevelopment work is expected to take place in 2027.
