SETHRA to distribute food in Meigs County

The Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency (SETHRA) will be distributing USDA commodities in partnership with the Chattanooga Area Food Bank to eligible residents in Meigs County on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the city and county building located at 351 River Road, Decatur from 11 a.m. until run out. Residents may sign up on the day of distribution. If you prefer to register in advance, contact your local SETHRA office. To schedule an appointment, call the Meigs County SETHRA office at 423-334-3305. To complete your application, you will need to provide proof of income for all household members or proof of category eligibility. Eligibility is based on total household income not exceeding the state-established maximum percentage of the federal poverty guidelines for your household size or meeting category eligibility requirements. In accordance with federal law and USDA policy, SETHRA is prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

Traffic signal to be added at Athens intersection

The City of Athens Public Works Department has announced the installation of a new traffic signal in town. Contractor crews are working on installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Old Riceville Road and West Madison Avenue. The affected area includes the intersections of Old Riceville Road at W. Madison Avenue and Old Riceville Road at Rocky Mount Road. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 a.m. and continuing until Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. there will be flaggers present for intermittent lanes closures with traffic down to one lane, and intermittent temporary full closures. There will be no lane closures during school drop off and pick up times. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, such as the Dennis Street overpass. Motorists traveling through this area are advised to use extreme caution and watch for traffic signage, workers and pedestrians. Motorists should allow additional travel time due to potential traffic delays in the area. For more information, contact the office of the public works department at 423-744-2745.

Crossville Breaks Ground on Major Retail Development

Dirt is officially flying in Cumberland County for a major new shopping hub. Crossville Mayor RJ Crawford led a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for Crossville Commons, a development on Genesis Road bringing several national retailers to the area. Crawford credited Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton and State Senator Paul Bailey for their vital legislative contributions at the state level, particularly in helping secure sales tax increment financing to make the project viable.
