John Joseph King, 28, allegedly made the contacts through phone calls, texts, voicemails, emails, canceled Cash App transactions, and social media posts, tags, and messages between November 2025 and August this year, according to Detective David Fizzano of the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office. K-9 sniffs out cocaine in Williamsport man's pockets, oxy in Mill Hall man's car

Williamsport, Pa. — A Williamsport man is charged with delivering one gram of cocaine and 18 Percocet pills to a Mill Hall man, according to court records. Franklin Probst of Mill Hall was pulled over after two traffic violations and allegedly admitted to buying the drugs from Khalil Mateen Baines, 40, of Williamsport. On Nov. 2, while sitting surveillance at the Family Dollar on Memorial Avenue, detectives saw a blue Lexus SUV registered to a Probst. Detectives watched Baines, who they described as "a known cocaine dealer in the Williamsport area," get out of the SUV's front passenger seat and walk inside the store. Baines reportedly stayed inside the story for two or three minutes, then returned and got back into the front passenger seat. The SUV then drove to the 400 block of Third Avenue where Baines exited and went into a residence. Probst drove the vehicle away, and was pulled over for crossing the street's double yellow line twice, according to detectives. Williamsport police, including Sgt. Brian McGee and K-9 Niko, conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle. The K-9 gave a positive alert, and a subsequent search recovered the gram cocaine and 18 Percocet pills, also known

Family members call shooting ‘murder’ as Michaels trial continues

Williamsport, Pa. — Family members of John Roskowski referred to the 2023 shooting that killed him as a “murder” during afternoon testimony Thursday in the trial of Kenneth Richard Michaels, prompting an objection from the defense and a caution from the judge. Michaels, 68, of Montoursville, is charged with criminal homicide and possession of a weapon in the Aug. 17 shooting death of his 69-year-old brother-in-law and former business partner, Roskowski. Roskowski was shot once in the abdomen in the lobby of a Cable Services building in Old Lycoming Township after Michaels unlocked a door and let him in. Both sides agree Michaels fired the shot. The central issue, however, is whether it was justified self-defense. Roskowski’s partner, who took the stand Thursday, referred to the shooting as a murder. His son also used the word “murder” twice during testimony before the defense objected. President Judge Eric Linhardt instructed the witness not to refer to the incident as murder, noting that while the witness was expressing a personal belief, the word carries a different meaning in a court of law. Victim's physical condition questioned Much of the prosecution’s case Thursday focused on Roskowski’s physical condition. Witnesses described him as overweight

State police seek driver in I-99 hit-and-run

Cogan House Twp., Pa. — State police are asking for help identifying the driver of a blue truck in an Oct. 29 hit-and-run on Interstate 99 north in Cogan House Township. The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. near mile marker 154.9, police said. A large vehicle, possibly a tractor-trailer, was traveling north in the left lane and apparently drifted into the right lane, where it sideswiped a 2017 Toyota Corolla. The truck did not stop, and the Corolla’s driver, a 53-year-old Wilson, N.C., woman, was not able to get its registration. The Corolla driver told police the possible tractor-trailer was a blue truck. She was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to the report. A fire company listed in the police report as Lewis Run VFD responded. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at Montoursville.

Wade sworn in as Lycoming County DA after Marino resigns

Williamsport, Pa. — Lycoming County has a new district attorney following the abrupt resignation of the county's chief prosecutor this week. Former First Assistant District Attorney Martin Wade was sworn in Friday as Lycoming County’s new district attorney, succeeding Tom Marino, who resigned the same day, citing health concerns. Assistant District Attorney Phoebe Yates was also sworn in as first assistant district attorney. She is the first woman to hold the first assistant position in the history of the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office. Under Pennsylvania law, the first assistant automatically assumes the district attorney’s office when the elected district attorney resigns mid-term. Wade will serve the remainder of Marino’s term, which ends in November 2027. The office will be on the ballot next year. Marino, 74, announced earlier this week that he was stepping down. In a letter to county residents, he described the decision as “a mix of sadness and gratitude” and said he was leaving “due to a combination of health reasons.” He had previously served as Lycoming County district attorney from 1992 to 2002 before becoming U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and later serving multiple terms in Congress. Wade has been first assistant

Accused killer paints himself as victim and protector in police interview played at trial

Williamsport, Pa. — Prosecutors zeroed in Friday on the long-dysfunctional relationship between an accused killer and his brother-in-law on the second day of the Cable Services murder trial in Lycoming County. During testimony, lawyers played the hourlong police interview in which shooter Kenneth Richard Michaels portrayed himself as both the victim of his brother-in-law, John Roskowski, and the man who spent decades holding the family and business together. Michaels, 68, of Montoursville, is charged with murder in the August 2023 shooting death of 69-year-old Roskowski. Roskowski was shot once in the abdomen in the lobby of a Cable Services building in Old Lycoming Township after walking into the building. Michaels admitted to the shooting, but claimed it was done in self-defense. In the interview with Detective Justin Segura of the Lycoming Regional Police Department, Michaels said, “Nobody has a good relationship with John.” He described how he bought out Roskowski’s shares in the company, ultimately paying more than he believed they were worth because he “wanted to be the good guy” and help the family. Michaels told Segura he had spent the last 40 years keeping the family together and “that’s what this is all about.” The day of the

Tropical Smoothie Cafe's Williamsport grand opening a resounding success

Williamsport, Pa. — Dozens stood — and some slept — in the cold for hours outside of Williamsport’s first Tropical Smoothie Cafe, securing their spot to win a year of free smoothies for the first 50 to enter. The store’s held their grand opening at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a ribbon cutting, courtesy of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. Lycoming County Commissioner Marc Sortman joined in on the festivities at the 1927 E. Third St. store. The Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which has been in its soft opening stage since Sept. 27, neighbors the freshly-opened Wing Stop, which had its first day of operations in Williamsport on Sept. 14. This location’s owners are familiar with the area’s smoothie scene. Het Patel, a Danville graduate, and his family opened the Tropical Smoothie Cafe at 195 AJK Blvd., Lewisburg in May while working on plans for the Williamsport location — and they’re not done. A Bloomsburg location is in talks, a staff member said. The cafe is a popular addition in the northcentral region's college towns, with a separately-ran store in State College open since 2024. The Williamsport restaurant has five full-time positions and several part time, according to staff. The menu

Trial opens for 2023 Cable Services shooting death case

Williamsport, Pa. — A six-day homicide trial opened Thursday in Lycoming County Court for a Montoursville man accused of fatally shooting his brother-in-law in the lobby of a Cable Services building in Old Lycoming Township in 2023. Kenneth Richard Michaels, 68, is charged with criminal homicide and possession of a weapon in the Aug. 17, 2023, shooting death of 69-year-old John Roskowski. Roskowski, a former business partner and brother-in-law of Michaels, was shot once in the abdomen with a 9mm handgun after Michaels unlocked a door and allowed him into the lobby. Prosecutors have said Roskowski was unarmed and in poor health at the time. Prosecution points to alleged resentment In opening statements Nov. 5, First Assistant District Attorney Martin Wade told jurors that Cable Services was a place where family members and employees knew one another, but that longstanding tensions existed. He referenced a 2021 incident in which Roskowski slapped Michaels and knocked his glasses off, after which Michaels increased security so that doors locked automatically and access required key cards. Wade said that on Aug. 16, 2023, the day before the shooting, Roskowski was at the property for an oil change and that Michaels warned employees at the

Several northcentral schools receive bomb threats Friday

State College, Pa. — Three schools in north-central Pennsylvania have reported receiving bomb threats by phone Friday morning, prompting evacuations and K-9 searches. State College Police said Mount Nittany Elementary School received a threatening call that was immediately reported. Investigators said the threat was not credible and is believed to have been a hoax “swatting” incident connected to similar calls at other schools across Pennsylvania. Out of caution, police provided a presence at schools throughout the district. At Renn Elementary in Lairdsville, East Lycoming School District Superintendent Dr. Gregory S. Scoggins said the school received a bomb threat call at approximately 8:35 a.m. Pennsylvania State Police were notified and the building was evacuated. Students were moved to an off-site location. When K-9 units needed additional time, the district began parent reunification. All students were reunited with parents or sent home on buses. Two bomb-sniffing K-9 units later cleared the building. The school was given an all-clear shortly after noon. No one was injured. In Lewisburg, the Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department said an individual called Linntown Intermediate School and reported that a bomb had been placed inside. Williamsport council accepts bid for vacant City Hall building 5-2

Williamsport, Pa. — Williamsport City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to accept the only bid that came in for the former City Hall building at 245 W. Fourth Street, and to move ahead with negotiating a sales agreement. Scott Williams, assistant director of community and economic development and planning, told council the city received a single bid for $455,000 when the invitation-for-bids period closed Sept. 30. After review, staff found the bid complete and compliant. The resolution accepts that bid and authorizes the city to proceed with a sales agreement. Solicitors will negotiate the details, and the finished agreement will have to come back before council for a separate vote. The building sits in the central business district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It would be sold as-is. Terms expected to be worked into the agreement include protections against demolition or major exterior changes, along with a possible right of first refusal for the city if the buyer later decides to sell. The buyer is JBAS Realty of Jessup, owned by John Basalyga. JBAS has indicated it plans to renovate the building for residential use while keeping the exterior intact.
