80-bed recovery center closes at Massillon health hub after 8 months

MASSILLON – A drug and alcohol recovery center operated by Ohio Valley Physicians Health has closed after about nine months inside a revamped health hub. The 80-bed addiction recovery facility opened in February at the Massillon Community Health & Innovation Center , 870 Amherst Road NE, which is the former site of Affinity Medical Center. It shut its doors on Oct. 16 due to apparent medical reimbursement shortfalls. Chris Zimmerman, chief executive officer of Massillon Community Health, said he's working on "a viable replacement" to occupy the former recovery center's space, adding that the process has been encouraging. A phone message left with a representative from OVP on Oct. 28 was not immediately returned. The recovery center was expected to bring in dozens of long-term jobs to Massillon, said Jackie Rebman, director of inpatient behavioral health for OVP, told The Independent in late February. Between $500,000 and $1 million of renovations had been made in preparation for the two-floor, rehab center in early 2026. Akron General doctor named AAP community pediatrician of the year

A Cleveland Clinic Akron General doctor has been named the Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics' 2026 community pediatrician of the year. Dr. Maureen Ahmann is the hospital's department of pediatrics chair and the Stark County Health Department's medical director. She received the award for her commitment to children's health in the Akron area, according to a news release. The award is given to a physician or partner each year to recognize their community commitment and work improving the health and safety of Ohio's adolescents. Ahmann started Akron's Grow with Us Garden outside her clinic, which she uses to provide patients and their families free fruits, vegetables and herbs. It's also used to teach families how to grow food at home. She has been in practice for over 20 years, the release said. "We are proud to honor Dr. Ahmann for her commitment to public health and to expanding access to healthy food for families," Melissa Wervey Gittelman, CEO of Ohio AAP said in the release. "This award recognizes her innovation and her work helping families discover sustainable ways to be healthy." Marion County to get new school-based health center

Marion County will receive funding for a new school-based health center as part of more than $55 million aimed at expanding health care access for children and families in rural Ohio. The Marion site is one of 17 new school-based health center sites in 15 counties receiving support, according to a community announcement from Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health . More than $20 million will support the 17 new sites and the expansion or continued operation of another 49 centers in 25 counties. School-based health centers provide primary care services on school campuses, eliminating some transportation and provider-access barriers for families. The centers also serve people living in the surrounding community. The announcement did not identify where the new Marion County center will be located or how much of the funding will go specifically to that site. Adena Health gets $750K grant to add two ambulances

A $750,000 federal grant will help Adena Health System buy and equip two ambulances to transport patients in southern Ohio. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development awarded the Community Facilities grant to expand Adena Health's emergency medical services transportation capabilities, according to a community announcement. The money will go toward two ambulances and the medical equipment, communication systems and safety features needed for inter-facility transfers, patient discharges and urgent transportation. The announcement said the additional vehicles will improve access to health care for rural residents and seniors with limited transportation options. USDA Rural Development Ohio State Director Charles Tassell presented the grant in Chillicothe with Rep. Dave Taylor of Ohio's 2nd Congressional District and Brynn Stepp from Sen. Jon Husted's office. “Too many rural Americans lack access to emergency medical services,” Tassell said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Rural Development is closing this gap. New income tax in Ravenna fails, Kent backs tax change

Voters are considering an increased income tax in Ravenna, a change to Kent's existing income tax, two countywide tax issues, an issue that would repeal zoning in Paris Township, and a variety of other ballot issues throughout the county. Issue 15 is a 0.25% income tax that would fund new facilities to replace the Ravenna police station at South Park Way and Spruce Avenue, as well as the neighboring fire station and city hall. According to complete but unofficial results from the Portage County Board of Elections, the issue failed 2,504 to 1,266. The building is estimated to cost $25 million, which also is the amount that would have been generated over the 30-year lifespan of the tax issue. The tax was the same as the May issue that went before voters. It failed on the primary ballot. Issue 16 would change a tax approved in 2013 to build Kent's police station into a permanent tax for additional purposes. The 0.25% income tax generates around $2 million per year.
