The Sporting Tribune Southern Section Division 1 Playoff Preview

The high school regular season is over! Now the California Interscholastic Federation postseason brackets begin! The Southern Section, which makes up Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Gabriel Valley, and some parts of San Bernardino County, is the biggest competitive region in the state- one of the biggest sections in the country. There are 14 different brackets representing different levels of play. The Division 1 playoff features eight of the best teams in the country, highlighted by previous national champions St. John Bosco, Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, and Sierra Canyon. There are treasures of Division 1 talent playing in this playoff. I can't wait to break it all down. Those four matchups are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, one week after the other Southern Section divisions begin postseason play. Here's an early preview.

Nearly two months after canceling its 2026 varsity high school football season, Pasadena High School (CA) is moving on from its head coach. Ron Jones announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Nov. 3, that the school informed it was moving in another direction with the football program. Jones led the Bulldogs to their first CIF Southern Section football championship since 1933 just two seasons ago. This morning, Pasadena High informed me that my time as head football coach has come to an end. Thank you to our players, families, coaching staff, and the Pasadena and Altadena communities for your support. Winless GHS gets playoff surprise

If any prep sports observer sees a football team go 0-10 on the field yet make the playoffs, it would be quite a shock. That was the case with Gardena High. Two days after finishing this season at 0-10 after getting shut out by Wilmington Banning 42-0 in the Panthers’ Marine League finale and homecoming game last Thursday at Los Angeles Harbor College, Gardena received a spot in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division II playoffs as they open at top seed Jefferson High Friday at 7 p.m. in South L.A. It is quite an unexpected thing as players and coaches thought they would hang up their gear, and, suddenly, they will play, at least, one more game and hope they can upset the Democrats for even more contests.
