Meet South L.A.’s Next Wave of Young Chefs
A South Los Angeles nonprofit brings on restaurants like Alta and Dulan’s on Crenshaw to mentor local budding cooks. On a recent afternoon by 60th Street Cafe in South Los Angeles, more than a dozen young adults wearing black aprons whizzed around a test kitchen dining room transformed into a full-service restaurant for the day. Sunlight beamed through the windows on tables covered in white cloth, gold runners, leaves, and candles; a DJ spun funk and oldies, from Zapp to The Manhattans. Servers jotted down drink orders from their friends and family members, there as guests and supporters, and brought out dishes they had cooked earlier that day, crispy lentil sambusas and creamy Cajun rasta pasta among them. The celebration represented a graduation and capstone project from the no-cost, six-week Kitchen to Capital culinary training program run by SoLa Foundation, a nonprofit that helps underserved communities gain educational and career opportunities in Los Angeles.
