'The Nurse at Baker Hospital' uncovers a medical scam

Jocelyn Cullity’s new novel, "The Nurse at Baker Hospital," is set in Eureka Springs, in the Ozarks, in 1939. The Great Depression has hit Arkansas hard, and especially Eureka Springs, which had been an expensive resort, a spa where wealthy patients went for the waters and the fresh air. But now, it is a boomtown gone bust. The biggest hotel there has been converted to a hospital, specializing in cancer treatment. The Baker Hospital has no modesty about its achievements. A huge banner hangs outside announcing “Cancer Is Conquered.” It is always a good idea to be skeptical of premature declarations of “Mission accomplished.” But the hospital PR people and Norman Baker, the self-proclaimed genius and director, are confident and contemptuous of treatments for cancer other than theirs. Baker has a high-wattage radio program like that of the anti-Semitic, pro-fascist radio priest Father Charles Coughlin who, at his height, had 30 million listeners out of an American population of 120 million. A Historic Visit to the Sweet Shack

Kevin and I took the short drive last week to historic Downing Street in Hollister to a fun little lunch spot called the Sweet Shack. They specialize in smash burgers, home cut fries, handcrafted and homemade ice cream, and even Italian ice. Wow, they are checking a bunch of boxes of happiness for me right there. I almost needed an extended stay. They have a fun family-friendly atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating, both video games and traditional games to play; a very welcoming vibe.

No priority violations at most Greene Co. kitchens inspected recently

Out of 51 routine inspections, more than 75% of the kitchens the Springfield-Greene County Health Department visited had no priority violations. Across the 39 inspections that had no priority violations, 31 had no violations at all. Issues found during inspections fall into either priority or non-priority violations. Priority violations impact the safety of the food, such as cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat food, improper food temperature and poor personal hygiene and employee health. Multiple priority violations can lead to an establishment being shut down. Non-priority violations alone do not directly affect food safety, such as dirty floors, sticky tabletops or outside trash cans not being covered.
