Lawrence County convicted murderer Banning dies in prison
Former Verona resident was serving 25-year prison sentence for burning ex-husband alive. A woman who doused her ex-husband with gasoline and set him on fire has died in prison. Barbara A. Banning, 78, who was sentenced to 25 years for killing Fred Bounous, of Verona, died of natural causes on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024 at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Chillicothe, according to a press release from the Missouri Department of Corrections.

A woman from Branson West, who was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash on Thursday, Feb. 22, in Stone County, is also facing a charge for drug possession. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported Frances Benson, 76, was traveling west on Highway 76 in Branson West, when her 1997 Dodge 1500 ran off the roadway and overturned.

Mt. Vernon & East Newton advance to Class 4 District 12 semifinals
Mt. Vernon and East Newton advanced to the Class 4 District 12 semifinals on Tuesday night with wins over Monett and Cassville, respectively. Mt. Vernon and Monett opened up the tournament with the Mountaineers using a big fourth quarter to come back for a 57-50 win. No. 5 seed Monett trailed 27-22 at the half, but used a 16-10 advantage in the third quarter to claw back into the lead at 38-37 going into the final quarter. Mt. Vernon exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Catch-and-keep trout fishing about to kick off across Missouri
MISSOURI, USA — Anglers are expected to flock to one of Missouri's trout parks soon as the catch-and-keep season opens back up. The season kicks off March 1 at 6:30 a.m., according to Missouri State Parks. Anglers can catch up to four trout a day at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon or Montauk State Park near Salem after they purchase a fishing permit and daily trout tag. The season runs through Oct. 31, after which the catch-and-release season will begin.

East Newton and Mt. Vernon advanced to the Class 4 District 12 semifinals with wins in the opening round on Monday night. No. 5 seed East Newton started the night out with an upset of No. 4 Cassville 42-33. Cassville was in control early with a 13-7 lead after one quarter and a 16-12 lead at the half. East Newton came out firing in the second half with an 18-11 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Patriots outscored Cassville 12-6 in the final quarter to ice the game.
