Urine smell, bugs in liquor, old foods & more at Wichita KS restaurants, hotels

Urine odor in a stairwell, bugs in liquor, insects around food equipment, stained and torn bedding, old meat and milk, exposed carpet nails, smoke detectors that didn’t work, expired medication for sale and more are among violations state inspectors discovered during recent food safety and lodging inspections in the Wichita area. Each week, The Eagle adds to its searchable database of failed inspections from Sedgwick County. Seven restaurants, hotels and other businesses were non-compliant with state regulations Oct. 25-31. Inspectors found few or no violations that week at more than 30 other locations deemed compliant with food safety and lodging rules. Kansas Department of Agriculture inspections are meant to protect the public from foodborne illnesses and other health risks. Locations can fail if they have too many problems, certain types of violations or issues that can’t be fixed right away. Violations are common. Most of the time, they’re corrected in front of an inspector. Examples of things that can be addressed immediately include serving food that’s more than a week old, employees mishandling ingredients and dirty kitchens. Issues that may take longer to correct include pest infestations, power outages and plumbing problems. It’s rare, but a business may be temporarily

Denning Gerig had spent much of his life listening to Mike Kennedy call Wichita State basketball games. On Wednesday night, he was the one sitting behind the microphone. Before his first broadcast as the new Voice of the Shockers, Gerig allowed himself a moment to look around Koch Arena. His eyes eventually drifted toward the rafters, where a banner honors the man who had held his new job for 46 seasons. For the first time in nearly half a century, a Wichita State men’s basketball season would begin without Kennedy calling the action . And Gerig was feeling the weight of the moment. “You only get one first, so there was a moment in the pregame show where I just looked around,” Gerig said. “I couldn’t believe that I was sitting where I was sitting, and it was hard not for my eyes to like drift up to Mike’s banner and think about what he meant to so many people, myself included. It’s just an honor to be the one to fill those shoes.” It was the culmination of a childhood dream for the 32-year-old Wichita native, who had grown up idolizing Kennedy and eventually developed a close relationship with
