Eugene 4J accepting new name suggestions for César E. Chávez Elementary
Eugene School District 4J is accepting suggestions to rename César E. Chávez Elementary School , following reports the school's namesake had a history of sexual abuse. The district is one of dozens of institutions that named buildings or landmarks after Latino and workers' rights leader César Chávez . Many of those institutions are now undergoing renaming processes after reports of sexual abuse of girls and rape of civil rights icon and colleague Dolores Huerta were revealed in an investigation by The New York Times published in March. The local elementary school was named after Chávez when it was first opened in 2004. The moniker, spearheaded by Jefferson Middle School's Latino youth club, made waves across town, according to past reporting by the Register-Guard. This month, 4J launched a four-month process to choose a new name for the elementary on Chambers Street and 14th Avenue. The timeline was laid out by a renaming committee with representatives from the school, the district and community.
