After More Than 170 Years, Siletz Tribe To Reclaim Ceded Land
The largest Dungeness crab ever caught in Oregon was rumored to be from a stretch of coastal land south of Yachats back around the 1930s, according to historian and tribal council member Robert Kentta. Like many members of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (CTSI), Kentta hopes the notoriety for a record-breaking crab is as much fame and attention as the Rocky Shores get as the tribe prepares to become stewards of the land once again.

Changing industry leads The Sparrow & Serpent to end alcohol sales
A gothic-themed performance venue and gathering space, located in a Eugene building long occupied by pubs, will stop serving alcohol Oct. 6. The Sparrow & Serpent, located at 211 Washington St., made the announcement it will no longer be operating as a bar through a Sept. 29 social media post signed by Owner Emily Chappell. Chappell said the change comes after The Sparrow & Serpent found itself asking difficult questions about why and how the space is operated. “The landscape of serving liquor has gotten so difficult to manage,” Chappell wrote. “From insurance companies dropping bar services across the state, increasingly high price on beer and alcohol, declining sales due to the economy and younger people moving away from bar culture, the cost and liability of managing an establishment like this is getting to be too much.” The change means all previous 21-and-up events will now be 18-plus, opening up dance nights to a wider age range. Alcoholic drinks will be replaced with non-alcoholic beer and kombucha, cocktails, espresso and coffee, as well as the possibility of fresh juices. Plans to bring in a small amount of baked goods are being explored, as is the possibility of creating 17-and-below dance
