Company reaches agreement with EPA on toxic Washtenaw Co. site
A Washtenaw County company has agreed to clean up toxic solvent under Ann Arbor and nearby communities, federal officials said Friday. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it has reached an agreement with Gelman Sciences LLC to clean up soil and groundwater in Ann Arbor and Scio Townships contaminated by a former medical filter manufacturing plant. The area, which is about four miles long and a mile wide, was declared a Superfund site in March . The site's addition to the EPA's Superfund National Priorities List meant its long-term, permanent cleanup is eligible for federal funding. "Since adding the Gelman Sciences site to the National Priorities List in March, EPA has moved quickly to put strong oversight and clear expectations in place," Anne Vogel, administrator for EPA Region 5, said in a statement. "This order provides a focused path for accelerating critical work to protect residents and advance long-term aquifer restoration, demonstrating EPA’s commitment to delivering effective and timely Superfund cleanups." The contamination has spread through the soil and groundwater beneath Ann Arbor and Scio Township for decades. Authorities determined the source was the former Gelman Sciences facility on South Wagner Road, where the company made medical filters from 1963-1986.

Monroe County FFA students explore high tech potato farming
HOWE, IN — Monroe County high school students traveling to this week's National FFA Convention in Indianapolis stopped Tuesday, Oct. 20, at two agricultural businesses in Ohio and Indiana to see the industry in action. Whiteford Agricultural School FFA Advisor/Instructor Jake Gust accompanied 60 FFA students from Whiteford, Dundee, Blissfield, and Sand Creek. The group visited Rupp Seed in Wauseon, Ohio, and Lennard Agriculture in Howe, Indiana, to explore agricultural careers and opportunities. Gust said the goal was to expose students to agricultural careers. Gust noted many students were familiar with corn, soybeans, and wheat, while the visits offered a chance to learn about other aspects of the industry, including specialty crops. Rupp produces crop seeds. Lennard is Michigan's second-largest potato grower. Students toured the expansive Lennard facilities just off the I-80/90 Toll Road south of Sturgis. “This was a great opportunity for our students to learn about the potato industry. There were many exciting experiences today,” Gust said. Kyle Lennard and his wife Stefani, both Monroe County natives, are third-generation owners of a family business founded in 1947 by his grandfather on five acres in Monroe County. The company now owns about 9,000 acres of potatoes across eight locations
