Gaylord updates master plan includes goals for housing, retail growth
GAYLORD — For the first time since 1996, Gaylord has an updated master plan after the city council adopted a new plan on a unanimous vote during their Monday, July 14 meeting. "It sets our strategic direction for the next five years," said Tyler Pischel, senior projects manager for the city. "We haven't updated it since 1996. I have been here for two years and I have been working on it during that time. We started with a survey." The master plan was developed with the help of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments. The plan does not include any new or updated zoning ordinances. That will be done separately and the planning commission is likely to consider those at the panel's August meeting. "It's not a hard and fast plan. It's a document that can change and evolve," city manager Kim Awrey said. Like other Northern Michigan communities, Gaylord is dealing with a housing shortage. "There are some action items (on housing) for different groups to take to the planning commission," said Pischel. The groups include the chamber of commerce and the Otsego County Economic Alliance. "There are some goals in there to keep different groups focused (on housing),"
