New security cameras, safety technology could come to Lincoln schools
WASHTENAW COUNTY – Lincoln Consolidated Schools is using safety grants from the state for new cameras and modernizing public announcement systems among other technologies. The district will finalize decisions in spending about $524,000 in state grants on safety and security related technology at its next board meeting next month.

Alpena Salvation Army is Helping Those in Need with Food, Clothing, Utility and Shelter Costs
The Salvation Army has many resources for the homeless, but also for those with a home and jobs, that are struggling. “We have a food pantry, but we also have a personal care pantry. So, if you have personal care items that you are in need of, we have it here. We also have a voucher system where if you need clothing or household items, we can send you to our thrift store with a voucher to be able to provide the items that you need. Utilities, if you’re struggling with your utility bill, then you can come to see us, and we can guide you in that. We also help with some rent and some mortgages, depending on what the issue and the situation that you’re in,” Corps Officer for the Salvation Army, Major Prezza L. Morrison said.

Alcona County Introduces Two New Disc Golf Courses this Summer
There is a new sports attraction opening up this summer in Alcona County. Two new disc golf courses in Lincoln and Harrisville are finally opening. “Welcome to Alcona Community Schools Grand Opening of their disc golf course. This is basket number two and I’m going to show you how to sink one,” said Jacquelyn Schwanz, mission driven community member.
Roadwork on Hwy 23 Through the Next Month
Alpena is experiencing a lot of roadwork before the summer begins. There are some delays on U.S. Highway 23. Michigan Department of Transportation’s Eric Precourt said that the maintenance work spans from south of Alpena to the Alcona County line. Work consists of a surface maintenance crew with a Dry Patch machine which mixes emulsion and stone simultaneously to help with ride quality issues. The project will be ongoing through the month. A mill and resurfacing project begin after Labor Day of this year on the same stretch of road.

Alpena Homeless Population Rises as Housing Task Force Takes on Issues
“The housing task force met at City Hall to try to find a solution, or a way to solve our homeless population. Now it’s expanded into how we solve our housing issues that exist in our community. Approximately 5o percent of Michigan’s renters and 25 percent of homeowners pay too much for housing. The population in Alice stands for; Asset, limited income constrained, employed,” United Way of Northeast Michigan Executive Director, Joe Gentry said.
Holy Cross Cemetery Places Veterans Flags on Graves this Memorial Day
For Memorial Day this year, Holy Cross Cemetery, along with some community members, paid a special tribute to Americans military veterans. Although the tradition is long past, this year the flags at Holy Cross Cemetery almost did not happen. “Yes, we’re going to be having a flag placement all over the cemetery. We received a grant from the Home Depot Foundation to buy it for these beautiful flag holders. All metal and then the flags that go in them. The old plastic flag holders were hard because they broke up in the wintertime and they didn’t last,” Kathleen Melville-Hall, cemetery committee. said. For our 156th Memorial Day in America Holy Cross will have flags.
