Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Approaching 100 Years

Previous to 1927, Rutherford County had no hospital, a handful of doctors and even fewer nurses to serve a county that was seeing high infant mortality rates. It was thanks to a grant of about $162,000 from the New York based Commonwealth Fund that the original Rutherford Hospital was built on three acres of land at the intersection of Bell and University Streets on what was then the outskirts of Murfreesboro. After many expansions over the years, the hospital, then called Middle Tennessee Medical Center, moved to its current 68.5-acre campus on Medical Center Parkway on October 2, 2010. It has continued to grow with the population expansion of Middle Tennessee and become Ascension Saint Thomas Medical Center. Click for More News.

Ballad Health provides update on BCBS disagreement

KINGSPORT — The following public statement was issued by Ballad Health on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and released to the media: Ballad Health has been, and remains, committed to negotiating in good faith with our long-term partner, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, to reach an updated provider agreement for its commercial, Exchange, TennCare and Medicare Advantage products while protecting access to care for the people, employers and communities we serve. Currently, Ballad Health also uses BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to provide administrative services for its own employees, who are self-insured by Ballad Health. Health systems across the country, including Ballad Health, are facing several imminent challenges, including: an increasing number of individuals leaving the insurance exchanges and becoming uninsured due to the elimination of enhanced premium subsidies by the federal government; major cuts to the Medicaid directed payment program for hospitals, which disproportionately impact rural regions, set to begin in January 2028 under the provisions of HR 1, otherwise referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill”; rising inflationary costs of supplies and medications; and increased subsidies for physician services due to low reimbursement by insurers, Medicare and Medicaid, driven in large part by the low Medicare area wage index in our

Many with ACA coverage face a new crisis in 2027: Insurers fleeing the market

Courtney Mroch was already paying a high price for health insurance when she learned her insurer, Cigna, was pulling out of Tennessee’s Affordable Care Act marketplace. The 56-year-old Nashville resident has diabetes and asthma and is a cancer survivor. She pays $1,250 a month for a silver plan this year, up from $850 a month in 2025 — more than her family’s mortgage. To keep costs down, her husband is enrolled in a separate, non-ACA plan that’s less expensive.

Next generation of healthcare professionals will be 'Made in Tennessee' | Opinion

Somewhere in Tennessee, a family will one day sit across from a healthcare professional they have never met. They may be facing a difficult diagnosis, welcoming a new baby, recovering from an injury or searching for answers about their health. They may never know where the doctor, nurse, therapist or other healthcare professional caring for them received their education. But there is a good chance that person was Made in Tennessee, through the education and training provided by the University of Tennessee Health Sciences. Preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals takes more than dedicated faculty and talented students. It also takes a commitment to providing the spaces, technology and hands-on experiences that prepare them for the challenges they will face. That commitment is taking shape through Tennessee's investment in the new College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building (COMIB) at UT Health Sciences , which will help prepare future healthcare professionals to serve communities across the state. At the recent groundbreaking, Ophelia Pilkinton, president of the College of Medicine Class of 2027, put it this way: “Somewhere, right now, there are patients we have never met, patients who do not know our names and don’t know what their futures hold,” she
