Patriot Legacies: Barclay McGhee an early explorer, landowner

Barclay McGhee was born Aug. 15, 1760. He was likely the son of Robert McGhee (1759-1819). As a young man, he lived in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He would have been about 15 years old when the Revolutionary War began in 1775. Few records have been found documenting his possible military service. One record indicates he participated in an expedition in the Ohio River Valley. His name appears on the “Pay Roll of Captain Joseph Ogles Campanie of Ohio Militia on the Expedition to Coshockton for 19 days.” The expedition was documented around April 19, 1781. McGhee would have been 20 at the time. The company consisted of about 40 men on horseback. The men, including McGhee, appear to have been paid about $10 each for the expedition. McGhee was listed as a private. At some point, Barclay McGhee married Jane McClanahan (1767-1835). Jane was the daughter of surveyor Charles McClung, who prepared the original plats of Knoxville in 1790. She was the granddaughter of James White, considered the founder of Knoxville. Barclay McGhee was likely wealthy when he arrived in the area. He added to his wealth through extensive landholdings in Monroe County. According to a 1976 article in
