NEW MEXICO — Another disturbance is dropping into the Southwest on Friday, bringing scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms to Arizona and New Mexico. Rain will favor eastern Arizona and the higher terrain Friday afternoon before shifting toward southern and southeastern New Mexico on Saturday. Most rainfall should be light to moderate, with cooler temperatures, clouds, and some snow on the highest mountain peaks before conditions improve by Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service’s Thursday morning update included a flood warning for the Salt and Gila rivers through 2 p.m. Saturday. See the water gushing from Arizona reservoirs after heavy storms

Salt River Project is releasing excess storm runoff that is filling reservoirs on the Verde River, making room for more water from the Halloween weekend storms. Up to 403,000 gallons of water per second were sent coursing into the Salt and Verde rivers from Horseshoe and Bartlett lakes east of Phoenix. Both reservoirs were nearing capacity after the storms. The water flowed into the normally dry Salt River through Phoenix and some of it will reach the Gila River in the southwest Valley. It could be seen flowing over the Tempe Town Lake dam at times, into the riverbed. Water from the releases is up for grabs by cities, farmers and irrigation companies., and it will also help recharge the aquifers. Further north, storm runoff into the Colorado River continued to push water levels higher at Lake Powell, the drought-stricken reservoir on the Arizona-Utah border. The lake has gained nearly 14 feet of elevation since Oct. 1, in part from the heavy rains.
