Public Hearing to be Held on PowerOn Midwest 765-kilovolt Transmission Line

Martin County residents will have a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed PowerOn Midwest 765-kilovolt transmission line during a public hearing next Thursday, November 12th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fox Lake Event Center in Sherburn. The proposed line would cross southern Minnesota, including Martin County, as part of a route connecting South Dakota to Dakota County. The project needs approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, which is seeking public input on its necessity and potential environmental impacts. The hearing will include opportunities for residents to speak and ask questions. The project has already faced opposition from local landowners and the Martin County Board. Additional hearings will be held November 10th in Windom and November 16th online. Written comments will be accepted through December 7th. Comments should reference docket number C-N-25-117.

Faribault County Board of Commissioners Received Update on SMIF at Tuesday Meeting

The Faribault County Board of Commissioners received an update Tuesday from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation on its investments in local communities. SMIF President and CEO Benya Kraus highlighted grants benefiting area libraries and schools, a business loan to Nutra-Boss Incorporated and a 10-thousand-dollar grant to the city of Elmore for sports equipment lockers at Wildcat Activity Park. Kraus said for every dollar Faribault County contributes to SMIF, 12 dollars are invested back into local communities. In other business, commissioners approved a resolution opposing the proposed PowerOn Midwest 765-kilovolt transmission line project while supporting affected landowners. The board also approved the purchase of a new Ford F-150 for just over 48-thousand dollars and authorized training for a county assessor’s office employee.

Fired executive director sues Le Sueur city, HRA over claims of discrimination

The former executive director of the Le Sueur Housing and Redevelopment Authority is suing the city and claiming that her May 15, 2024, firing violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Melissa Huntington, through her attorney Adam N. Froehlich, of Mankato, says she disclosed several mental health diagnoses, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder to board members after receiving a negative performance review and the board did not take adequate steps to provide accommodations. The complaint was filed June 29 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Following the review, Huntington formally disclosed her diagnoses and told the authority board she needed reasonable accommodations in order to meet the board’s expectations, the lawsuit states. According to the complaint, Huntington’s evaluation by the board, which was conducted on Nov. 15, 2023, showed she needed to improve her “overall management performance,” “communications/relationship with the HRA board,” “staff supervision and overall performance of HRA staff,” “financial management and project management” and “achievement of goals set by the HRA board.” The review contained several comments, including that Huntington was “unprepared,” “relied on calling other (executive directors) and HUD personnel to complete tasks that she should be able

City Administrator Joe Roby announces retirement

After four years serving as Le Sueur’s city administrator, Joe Roby has submitted his resignation from the position. “It is with mixed emotions that I want to share with you that I have submitted to Stacy my notice of resignation as City Administrator,” Roby wrote in the resignation letter provded to Le Sueur County News. “My last day with the city will be Dec. 16. I would like to thank the council for the opportunity to serve as your city administrator for the past 4.5 years; it has been a great privilege. I love this community with a passion, and it has been a tremendous honor to work on behalf of the community in this capacity.” With Roby’s resignation, effective Dec. 17, a proposal has been put forward for the City Council a transtion plan. The proposal, to be considered at the city’s Nov. 9 meeting, ask the city to consider seeking assistance through a professional recruiter or elect to utilize the city’s existing hiring process to fill the vacancy.

Local School Board and Referendum Results

(Undated) In local school board elections the MCW school district elected Paul Schoen, Sam Meixell and Brandon Clarke to the board. In Fairmont there were three running for the School board so Michael Edman, Jen Harris and Betsy Tino will serve the Fairmont School District. Jackson County Central elected Kylla Hummel, Nolan Schuller and Shelly Hotzler to the board and the school referendum passed at JCC by slim margin of 132 votes. The referendum replaces a current $460 per pupil funding level and increases it to $1460 per student. School officials warned that drastic reductions would have had to take place had the measure not passed. Mark Franta, Kyle Zierke, and Brice Hanson won their school board election for the Blue Earth Area School District.

FAIRMONT – Community leaders and economic development experts gathered Thursday to discuss priorities for Fairmont’s future as Region Nine Development Commission develops a long-term economic strategy for South Central Minnesota. The 20-year plan will focus on jobs, housing, childcare, infrastructure and quality of life, while helping communities qualify for state and federal grants. Among Fairmont’s biggest needs identified were expanding childcare, keeping young people in the community after graduation and strengthening manufacturing through agricultural technology and automation. Participants also stressed the need for stronger partnerships, leadership and accountability to turn ideas into action. Fairmont Opera House Executive Director Blake Potthoff said the community also needs to do a better job promoting its lakes, broadband infrastructure and quality of life to attract visitors, businesses and remote workers.
