Every Hoosier Should Visit The Indiana Diner Where A Beloved Sandwich Legend Was Born

There are places you eat at, and then there are places you make a pilgrimage to, and Nick’s Kitchen in Huntington, Indiana, is firmly, unapologetically, and deliciously in the second category. The breaded pork tenderloin sandwich was born here, and if that doesn’t make you want to get in...

Swanton’s DeEtte’s Dream Diner

This is a good time of year for a short drive. For a worthwhile adventure, take Airport Highway west into Swanton, Ohio. DeEtte’s Dream Diner sits a bit off the beaten path. Pulling up, the building doesn’t look like much from the outside. My son reminded me not to judge a book by its cover. “Maybe it’s cool in there,” he said. And he was right! Past the colorful metal rooster greeting visitors (along with a season-appropriate plastic skeleton dressed like a farmer), the door opens into an extremely warm environment. Country music plays in the background, paired with a small wooden plaque that says “Hello, Sunshine!”

Sometime in the early 1990s, workers stuffed dough with cheese and toppings, basted it in garlic butter, and accidentally created a legend. Now the place calls itself...

A plate of brown buttered noodles sitting next to a slice of Gma’s Amish Meatloaf is a lunch you can’t fake. That combo shows up at a small country restaurant where horse-drawn buggies roll past outside. I love that it skips the corporate script completely. The lunch buffet...

Since 1916, Indiana Hot Dog Fans Have Squeezed Into The Tiny Booths At Powers Hamburgers In Fort Wayne

Some restaurants grow bigger every decade. One little Fort Wayne spot did the opposite and simply stayed small, stubborn, and busy. The griddle is tiny, the seating is tighter than a family road trip, and the line still stretches out the door on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Generations of Indiana families have crowded around the same counter for hot dogs and pint-sized hamburgers, and plenty of them now bring their own kids.
