Google data center near Palo would use 10.4M gallons of water per day
PALO — Google’s proposed data center campus near Palo could use up to 10.4 million gallons of water each day, drawn directly from the Cedar River. That figure — what it takes to fill 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools — is outlined in a water use memo Google sent to Palo as part of the company’s exploration into a roughly 550-acre site near the Duane Arnold Energy Center. It’s estimated the withdrawal would amount to roughly 0.3% of the Cedar River’s total annual flow. Those projections are for the facility at full scale, but construction of the site will be phased. That means initial water use demands would be smaller and grow over time. Google has stated the site could hold up to six buildings, with one building per phase. Based on those figures, Google technical program manager Kiran Udayakumar last month told Palo residents the Cedar River could safely handle that withdrawal under normal, dry and drought conditions without adverse impacts. “At every Google site, we conduct a rigorous, multifactor watershed health assessment,” he said. “That assessment confirmed that the (Cedar River) basin has healthy, long-term capacity and low overall physical water scarcity.” The proposed data center campus near Palo
