(LOMA, Colo.) Department of Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host the HITS Triathalon Series on June 12 at Highline Lake State Park to provide a considerable location for the athletic contest.

The triathlon is designed to meet the needs of a multitude of athletic levels, featuring shorter races for novices to a full multi-stage event consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike race and a 26.2-mile run, according to a press release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Those participating will take a swim in Highline Lake and proceed to bike and run on park trails and nearby county roads.

"This is a great place to hold a triathlon," said Park Manager Alan Martinez. "Participants will have a beautiful backdrop for their run and bike race and the lake provides a great venue for the swimming portion."

Highline Lake State Park will undergo several closures in addition to altered hours of operation on June 11 and June 12. The west boat ramp will be closed to all boaters on June 11 in order to set up the start and finish transitional areas.

Furthermore, the west entrance will close to all public access on June 12 so that all the racers can utilize the area. Boating access will have to take place at the east boat ramp on both days. The lake will also be closed until 11 a.m. or until all swimmers are no longer in the water.

All normal activities at the park will resume on June 13. The deadline to register for the triathlon is June 9.

"The event will introduce visitors from all over the United States to the extraordinary hospitality and outstanding assets of the park and the nearby communities of Loma, Fruita, and Grand Junction," Martinez said.
