Tipping on cruise ships is always a controversial topic. Some cruise passengers believe that tipping should be a personal choice, and others argue that automatic tipping policies are necessary to ensure fair compensation for crew members.

Carnival Cruise Line has a policy in place that automatically adds daily gratuities to guests' bills. These gratuities are then distributed to the crew members who provide various services onboard.

The cruise line justifies this policy by stating that it "streamlines the recognition process" and ensures that the crew members receive fair compensation for their work.

However, not all passengers agree with this approach. Some argue that tipping should be a personal choice, allowing guests to reward exceptional service directly and avoid paying for services they did not receive.

An unnamed passenger quoted in a social media post expressed frustration with the mandatory tipping policy, stating,

"If you stop your customers having the right to remove all gratuities then you would see an exodus like never before. I don't concern myself about what the staff makes, how gratuities are divided up, or their workload. That's between the employee and the employer. If I feel occasionally that someone deserves a gratuity I will give it to them. If not then I will not. It is our choice. It is not the cruise line to take away."

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald responded to this criticism by emphasizing that the company has no immediate plans to change its tipping policy.

He acknowledged that some passengers may choose to remove their gratuities and instead tip individual crew members directly.

But he also expressed disappointment with this practice, stating that it can unfairly penalize behind-the-scenes workers who do not have direct interaction with guests.

    Heald further explained,

"If you remove your daily gratuities because your room steward does not perform to your expectations and hand a tip to your waiters, you're punishing the behind-the-scenes workers who share in the tip pool. You never meet the person who does your laundry, but that does not mean they don't earn a tip."

The debate over tipping on cruises highlights the broader societal discussion about fair compensation and the role of gratuities in the hospitality industry.

While some argue that tipping is a necessary part of ensuring adequate wages for service workers, others contend that it can create an unfair and unpredictable income system.

So let me get this right. The customer is now paying the workers. With what the cruise ship is explaining the why behind their mandated BS. There's no other way to put it. We are now paying for their employee's compensation
