Choosing the right place to retire involves balancing affordability, access to healthcare, and proximity to loved ones. But safety is also crucial, especially for older adults.

According to a recent GoBankingRates.com ranking, Pinehurst, a small village in North Carolina's Sandhills Region, tops the list of the safest and most affordable places to retire in the U.S.

Pinehurst stands out for its low crime rates and reasonable cost of living, which is around $68,516 annually. The median home value, according to Zillow, is $500,000, making it an attractive option for retirees looking for both safety and affordability.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the village has a significant senior population, with over a third of its residents aged 60 or older. Pinehurst's mild climate, abundant parks, and proximity to the Atlantic coast and Blue Ridge Mountains make it ideal for an active retirement lifestyle.

Pinehurst is also renowned as the "Home of American Golf," boasting a rich golfing history and over 40 golf courses.

In comparison, the second-place town, Rockport, Massachusetts, offers similar safety but with a higher cost of living, while Frankfort, Kentucky, ranks third for its affordability and high livability score.

For retirees prioritizing safety, community, and a moderate cost of living, Pinehurst, NC, is a top choice.

not if you drive a car. It is the most dangerous place to drive in North Carolina. And it's very expensive. always has been, that's nothing new. it was expensive compared to other places even in the '70s.
