In 2022, fewer Americans moved overall, but when they did, 1 in 5 chose to relocate to a different state, according to recent Census data.

Population growth has returned to pre-pandemic levels, with Southern states continuing to attract new residents, while the Northeast, particularly New York and Pennsylvania, saw the largest declines.

United Van Lines' 2023 movers study echoed these trends, highlighting New Jersey, Illinois, and North Dakota as the states with the most outbound moves.

In North Carolina, Stacker used Census Bureau data to rank the top states where residents relocated.

South Carolina topped the list, with 36,324 North Carolinians moving there in 2022, making up 14% of the state's new residents.

Following South Carolina, Florida attracted 24,601 North Carolinians, while 23,175 people moved to Georgia.

Virginia and Texas rounded out the top five, with 21,395 and 17,975 North Carolinians moving to these states, respectively.

These numbers underscore the strong regional migration patterns, with North Carolinians favoring nearby Southern states and Texas, reflecting broader national trends of population shifts toward the South and West.
