Easton council alters sign fee guidelines
EASTON — The Easton Town Council made changes to the current sign fee guidelines on Monday night, in the midst of an overhaul of the town’s fee schedule. Recent meetings have included fee discussions surrounding trash pick-up, mattress disposal and more. At its meeting Monday night, the council suggested alterations to sign fees. Under previous guidelines, signs were considered either permanent or limited duration signs. Regardless of the type of sign, it required a town-issued permit, which cost $150. Permanent signs were charged once, while limited duration signs had to renew their permit — and pay the fee — annually. Mayor Megan Cook says the town made $13,200 on sign fees last year. According to Town Manager Andy Kitzrow, a change was recommended. “I believe, talking with our planning and zoning director, there’s still an appetite to maintain for other signs a permit fee of $150,” Kitzrow told the council. “Our recommendation would be to modify it. If we were going to modify it at all, it would be to split that into two.” Town planning staff ultimately recommended distinguishing between permanent signs — which would still bear a permit fee — and free limited duration signs within town code.

Grace Street’s purple boxes offer 24-hour access to naloxone
EASTON — Bright purple boxes across the Mid-Shore give people around-the-clock access and wound care kits. Grace Street, a recovery community organization based in Easton, began placing the boxes about two years ago. Kelley Callaghan, founder and director of Grace Street Easton, said the boxes are nicknamed Barneys because their bright purple color reminds people of Barney the dinosaur. Each box weighs about 20 pounds and has a base that can be filled with water to keep it in place. Grace Street restocks the outdoor boxes weekly. The organization describes them on its flyer as having “no barriers, just grab and go.” In Talbot County, boxes are at the Neighborhood Service Center and Days Inn in Easton and at Kronsberg Park in Tilghman. In Caroline County, they are at St. Luke’s Church in Denton, Lucky’s Corner in Federalsburg and a bus stop off Morris Avenue in Federalsburg. In Dorchester County, boxes are at Stop Shop in Hurlock and at Groove City Mini Market and Agape Temple of Praise & Ministries in Cambridge. In Queen Anne’s County, a box is at Go Mart in Church Hill. “Anybody can go up to them and open the door and grab naloxone, grab test
