NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A 30-year-old woman was killed and her passenger left in critical condition on Friday when her Jeep crashed and flipped over at a dangerous stretch of the Bronx River Parkway.

Police responded to the site of the crash on Bronx River Parkway, near the Boston Road exit, at 3:18 a.m. on Friday. An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad followed.

According to the investigation, a 30-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Jeep Commander northbound on Bronx River Parkway when the Jeep lost control of the roadway and slammed into the guard rail.

After the crash, the Jeep overturned several times, ejecting the woman from the vehicle and onto the grass shoulder.

The 30-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

A 34-year-old man who was in the Jeep sustained both internal and external injuries and was removed from the vehicle by the FDNY. EMS transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in critical, but stable, condition.

The release of the woman’s identity is pending family notification, police said late Sunday afternoon.

The area where the crash happened—between northbound exits 5 and 6—was the site of a fatal accident in 2012 that left seven members of the same family dead, according to reporting by the New York Daily News.

“I think it would be fair to say that this is the Bermuda Triangle of the Bronx River Parkway,” attorney Eric Buckvar told the Daily News following the 2012 crash.

Buckvar had sued the state and city on behalf of the victims of a 2006 crash that killed six people, including a six-year-old girl. The lawsuits led to settlements and the city replacing the median barrier, but little other infrastructural change.

“We did a lot of discovery of state records, and we found there was a problem. Traffic would slow down very quickly, and sometimes cars would lose control,” Buckvar said.

Last January, another man perished when he lost control of his car, veered off the roadway and hit a tree.

Friday’s crash remains under investigation and there have been no arrests.
