Let’s all raise a Bud Light against intolerance (letter to the editor)
I read with interest Brian Laline’s recent Letter from the Editor, “When a man becomes a woman . . .” and his discussion of the right pace for change. I am reminded of being in graduate school in the late 1970s, working on my geology dissertation in a rural part of the west. My research required spending a lot of time in remote towns. When the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was released in 1979 there was an outrage; people were angry that a woman, especially one who had worked to ensure women the right to vote, appeared on the coin and there was an ugly backlash. Many bars and stores put up signs saying that they refused to accept the coin. I made it a special point to go to the bank before I left on my trips to get a roll of dollar coins and it was the only cash I took. I would seek out those bars, the ones with signs, order drinks, and then pay with Susan B. Anthony coins. It was my little way of speaking out against intolerance. Interestingly, I don’t think anyone ever refused payment!

NYC teacher arrested after shoving girl, 13, in school: cops
A male Brooklyn teacher has been arrested for shoving a 13-year-old female student, authorities said. The young teen was trying to pick up a computer tablet inside M.S. 443, New Voices School of Academic & Creative Arts, in South Slope around 1 p.m. Monday when instructor Joshua Kahn, 59, became irate and yelled at her before pushing her six to eight times, causing her to hit her back on a bookshelf, police said. The student suffered bruising and was taken from the school on 18th Street near Sixth Avenue to Methodist Hospital for observation, cops said. It is unclear what exactly led to the assault. Kahn was arrested around 6:30 p.m. and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, assault and harassment, police said. “This alleged behavior is very troubling and completely unacceptable,” said city Department of Education spokeswoman Jenna Lyle in a statement. “This employee has been reassigned away from the school and students pending the outcome of the arrest and if convicted, we will pursue termination,” she said. “Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our students.”
NYPD Cops Hand Out Hundreds Of 'Get Out Of Jail Free' Cards
A New York City police officer is suing the department over unofficial get-out-of-jail free cards used by friends and family of cops to get out of traffic tickets. Officer Mathew Bianchi filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan over reprisals he suffered at the hands of his superiors for not complying with the corrupt and unsanctioned practice. According to Bianchi’s lawsuit, it doesn’t take much for a non-officer to earn a courtesy card, and they can even be found for sale on eBay. From the Associated Press:

The Hamptons real-estate agent killed alongside her toddler in a “ghost plane’’ crash was adopted at age 40 by notable Trump donors — who said she reminded them of their daughter who had died in a tragic scuba diving accident almost 30 years ago. Adina Azarian, a top longtime New York realtor, and her 2-year-old daughter, Aria, were two of four people killed when a private jet crashed in rural Virginia on Sunday, said her adoptive father, John Rumpel. Rumpel, a Florida business magnate and GOP donor who gave $250,000 to then-President Donald Trump’s failed 2020 re-election campaign, said Azarian, 49,...
